The burglars are described as white males. One is a 5-foot, 8-inch, heavy-set man with bad teeth who was wearing dark clothes, a reflective vest and a tool belt. The other man had his face covered.
They were last seen leaving the area in a white minivan. The elderly couple lives near 94th Street and 77th Avenue in Hickory Hills.
The heavy-set man walked up to the couple's door and claimed their neighbor had a basement water leak, police said. He also told them he worked for "Public Works before trying to lead the couple to the back of their house.
One of the victims then saw the second, masked man enter the house. Both burglars fled when he threatened to call police.
Police say this ruse burglary is similar to others that have hit the area recently.
Earlier last week, the Cook County Sheriff's office announced the arrest of .
Miller wore a white hard hat and carried a tan shoulder bag with a fluorescent stripe during the alleged ruse, police said.

You obviously don't know old people too well, they are creatures of habit, very old habits. My building has had several meetings about letting people in the bulding and reminders go out and there is literature posted in public spaces like the laundry room for all to see. But once every few weeks I get someone knocking on my door that I have to escort out the building. The gov't being intrusive would be OLPD making it mandatory to attend a class, not offering it. Even sending out a newsletter to residents would suffice. Old folks aren't reading the Patch and made aware of these ruse burglars. The village needs to raise awareness is all I'm saying.
