Full-Scale Police Exercise Now Underway in Oak Lawn

Area law enforcement agencies and firefighters are participating in an "active shooter" drill at Oak Lawn Community High School all day Sunday.

An “active shooter” drill is now in progress at Oak Lawn Community High School at 9400 Southwest Highway.

Over 300 police officers and firefighters are participating in a training exercise that is expected to from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 25). If you see helicopters, SWAT teams and or a large contingent of police officers around the high school today, they’re all part of the drill.

Letters were distributed to residents living near OLCHS advising them of Sunday’s exercise. For the duration of the drill, Austin Avenue between 95th and 93rd Streets will be closed between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Local residents who live on Austin and 94th Street can still access their homes by entering off of 93rd Street during the exercise.

The full-scale, multi agency drill is one of the largest to be conducted in the state. Sunday’s exercise is designed to test the response capabilities of local first responders during a mass casualty/active shooter event.
