Alfreda Giedrojc is accused with the Oct. 6 murder of Vivian Summers, her 5-month-old granddaughter. In an earlier video statement, Giedrojc claimed she repeatedly bludgeoning her granddaughter with a sledgehammer then slit the child's throat with a carving knife. Vivian's murder was the first in Oak Lawn in three years.

The ruling by a Cook County Circuit Court judge concurred with a psychiatrist's determination in May that Giedrojc, 62, was not mentally fit to stand trial at this time, the Sun-Times Media report stated. The judge took five minutes to hand down his ruling at Monday's fitness hearing, the report added.

The judge ordered Giedrojc back in court Aug. 28 to find out her treatment schedule, the report stated, adding that she will re-evaluated in a year to see if she is fit to stand trial after the treatment. Giedrojc will continue to be held at the Cook County Jail, where she has been since her Oct. 6 arrest, according to the report.

County psych units are full of these patients. Grandma will be on so many psychotrophic meds she may have no recollection of the event.

While she is most assuredly mentally ill, she definitely planned this event by hiding that sledgehammer in the closet. Obviously she had some wits about her to plan a future, horrid attack like this even while being mentally ill. How sad and depressing.

Hey Michelle, Who should pay for this lunatics mental health? The taxpayers? Take a look at that house she lived in!! Very expensive and she has a public defender? This family knew she was a nut case and they left that baby there as the baby was sleeping and felt she was safe. I hope she burns in hell and I hope the other inmates get to her. As much as I have compassion for the STUPID STUPID family they are responsible for that beautiful childs' death. She did not deserve to die at the hands of her own grandmother. I wish her nothing but pain. If somebody needs treatment for mental health then pay for it.

The general public is safe whether she's in jail awaiting trial or in a hospital and that's what's most important.
