Oak Lawn grandmother accused of killing infant granddaughter indicted in court on Monday morning. Public defender says, "We got a lot of work to do."

The Oak Lawn grandmother accused of murdering her 6-month-old granddaughter made a brief appearance in court on Monday morning

Alfreda Giedrojc, 62, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder with intent to kill or injure, in a Bridgeview courtroom.

Wearing a blue jail uniform, Giedrojc’s head barely reached the podium as a Polish interpreter explained the morning’s proceedings.

Appearing at Giedrojc’s side was her attorney, public defender Michael Wilson. It did not appear that any family members were present.

Giedrojc allegedly bludgeoned her infant granddaughter, Vivian Summers, of Bolingbrook, with a sledgehammer, while caring for the child in her home in the 6600 block of West 91st Street, on Oct. 6.

When the baby would not stop crying or moving, the grandmother retrieved a carving knife from the kitchen, held the baby in her arms, and slit the infant’s throat, prosecutors said at her bond hearing the next day.

It was also alleged that Giedrojc had placed the sledgehammer in her closet the night before.

After the hearing, Wilson said that case is still in pre-discovery. He could not answer if Giedrojc had a history of mental illness.

“There’s a lot of stuff. We’re getting all the records,” Wilson said. “We got to talk to the family. We got a lot of work to do.”

Wilson said it was not a surprise that baby Vivian’s parents or other family members weren't present in court.

“I finished a case that went on for six years and the defendant’s mother didn’t come to court until last week,” Wilson said.

Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy set her arraignment for Nov. 14, when Giedrojc is expected to enter a plea.

The grandmother is currently being held without bond in Cook County Department of Corrections' Cermak Hospital.
