Mapping out car burglaries in Oak Lawn.

reported eight car burglaries which took place over five days during the first week of August.

Of those, four burglaries occurred from cars that were unlocked; four were breakins.

MONDAY, AUGUST 6

  • A purse containing medication, makeup and hearing aid batteries was stolen from an unlocked, 2004 Hyundai utility vehicle parked in the 8700 block of Ridgeland Avenue sometime before 5:49 a.m. The car owner left her purse on the passenger side floor.
  • Hand tools valued at 150 were stolen from a 2001 Ford van parked at a scrap metal business in the 9200 block of Keating Avenue. Entry was gained by damaging the rear door cargo lock.
  • An iPod nano, plus spare house and garage keys were stolen from an unlocked 2006 Dodge Caravan parked in front of a home in the 10000 block of South Merrimac Avenue. At 1 a.m., police were called to 99th Street and Merrimac Avenue after a report of a tall, thin man checking car door handles.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 5

  • A GPS unit was stolen from an unlocked 2005 Chevy utility van parked in the 8700 block of South 55th Avenue. Estimated loss was $100.
  • Someone smashed the driver's door window of a 2006 Chevy parked in 8700 block of South 55h Avenue and removed a purse and stereo system.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2

  • A thief entered an unlocked car on 10900 block of South Kilbourn Avenue and stole a purse from the front seat console and a container full of change.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1

  • A laptop and a set of handtools were stolen from a 2003 Honda Civic parked in the 9500 block of Minnick Avecnue. Entry was gained by using a pry tool to force open the driver's side door. Estimated loss and damage were $3,000.

TUESDAY, JULY 31

  • An iPod, camera and file box containing documents were stolen from a 2007 Chevy van parked in the 9200 block of Tully Avenue. Entry was gained by punching out the passenger side door lock.
