No Charges in Road Rage Incident After Man Smacks His Head on Pavement

Confrontation ends in fist fight on Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn, police say.

Police determined that a 50-year-old man left bloody and battered was the aggressor in a road rage incident that happened near Cicero Avenue and 103rd Street in Oak Lawn.

The altercation began near a sporting goods store on the 9600 block of South Cicero Avenue around 7 p.m. Aug. 3.

The man told police he got angry after he was cut off by another driver—a 34-year-old man—and then drove after him down Cicero, the police report said.

The 50-year-old man got the younger driver’s attention as they drove side by side on Cicero. Police said the man admitted to calling the younger man, who is black, derogatory names.

The younger driver gave a similar account to police, but added that the older man started the incident. He said the older man crossed two lanes of traffic and without warning moved into his lane, causing him to stop.

Both men got out of their cars and met between them in the street. The older man poked the younger driver in the chest, and the younger man slapped his hand away, warning him not to touch him, police said.

According to the report, the younger driver punched the older man after he poked him in the chest a second time. The two struggled and the older man got punched a second time, this time falling and hitting his head on the pavement, the report said.

Police said the older man had a four-inch cut on the back of his head. He was treated at the scene and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

The younger man refused to file a complaint after police determined he was the victim.

No charges were filed against the older man.
