Driver Accused of DUI Tells Cops: 'Take Me In'

While on patrol, a police officer noticed a Ford carryall driving over the curb of a parking lot at 10700 S. Cicero Ave., before accelerating across all lanes of traffic on to 107th Street, reports said.

Police conducted a traffic stop at 107th Street and Keating Avenue about 1:30 a.m. As the officer approached the driver, identified as Roberto Garcia, 30, of Cicero, he asked Garcia if he knew why he was stopped, police said.

According to the police report Garcia appeared nervous and did not respond to the officer’s question.

Police said the officer could smell alcohol and asked Garcia for his driver’s license and proof of insurance. Garcia handed over an insurance cardholder with several expired cards inside and mumbled, “it’s in there,” reports said.

After more questioning, police said Garcia admitted to not having a driver’s license. Garcia exited the vehicle and allegedly told the cop he had three to five beers.

When he was asked to take field sobriety tests, Garcia told the officer: “Sir, I already know my license is suspended so take me in,” reports said.

Police said that Garcia refused to take a preliminary breath test, and refused to blow at the Oak Lawn police station.

Garcia allegedly admitted to drinking Miller Lite and Cornoa at a friend’s house and then at a bar.

The Cook County assistant state’s attorney approved a felony charge of aggravated DUI. He was also cited for multiple traffic offenses. Garcia was waiting to appear in court on May 12 at the time of this report.
