Pedestrian Killed By Train Ruled a Suicide

Oak Lawn man identified in pedestrian struck and killed by Metra train in Chicago Ridge, medical examiner's office says.

The pedestrian struck and killed by a Metra train during Thursday’s rush hour has been ruled a suicide.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian as James Cloney, 23, of Oak Lawn.

Cloney was struck shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday in Chicago Ridge  near 101st Street and Moody in Chicago Ridge.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said that the engineer was steering the five-car train westbound toward the Chicago Ridge Metra Station at 103rd and Ridgeland when he observed a man stepping out and laying down on the tracks.

“It’s very hard on the train personnel when this happens,” Reile said. “They do brake the train, but by the time we see the individual at that point it’s too late.”
