Clean-Cut Hooligans

A woman claims she was stopped at a traffic light at Central Avenue and 95th Street around 3:23 a.m. when a Pontiac Grand Am stopped in the lane next to her. Police said three male blacks in dark hoodies got out of the car and whacked her rear windshield with an unknown object. The windshield shattered and the alleged offenders got back into the Pontiac and drove northbound on Central Avenue. The woman said she last saw the car at Major Avenue and 88th Street. Oak Lawn and Burbank police were not able to locate the car. The car is registered to an address in Alsip. Alsip police checked the address but didn’t find the car. The woman described the offenders as being in their mid- to late teens, with short hair and “clean cut.” One of them wore glasses. She says she can identify them.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27

Warrant Arrest

Police observed a 1997 Chevy Lumina traveling southbound on Cicero Avenue from 103rd Street around 5:48 p.m. The officer knew the driver and vehicle to be a drug user and burglar, with whom he has had several run-ins, reports said. The officer ran a plate check on the car and learned the driver and registered owner had a valid warrant out of Cook County for probation violation. The driver was identified as Ryan Malone, 20, of the 9800 block of South Mayfield Avenue. The warrant was confirmed and Malone was taken into custody. Malone was being held pending extradition.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25

The Old Switcheroo

A loss prevention officer for Kmart at 4101 W. 95th St. observed Derrick Dowdell, 29, of Chicago, enter the store and proceed to the lay away department around 8:26 p.m. Dowdell paid for his merchandise and left the store.

Police said that Dowdell came back into the store without any merchandise. He got a shopping cart and filled it up with identical merchandise he had paid for at layaway. Dowdell was seen allegedly putting merchandise that he took off shelves into Kmart bags, before proceeding back to the service desk. He presented his receipt and received a refund of $149.26 cash for the merchandise he did not purchase, reports said.

Dowdell was confronted outside the store  loss prevention officer identified himself and escorted Dowdell back to the security office. The merchandise was recovered and returned to the store. Dowdell was arrested and brought to the Oak Lawn police station.

At the station, police said Dowdell indicated that he just wanted to bond out of jail and would not give a formal oral or written statement. He was charged with one count of retail theft and has to appear in court on Nov. 15.
