POLICE BLOTTER: December Burglaries and Break-Ins

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26

GPS Unit Stolen

Thieves broke the window of a Dodge van parked on the 10100 block of South Mansfield Avenue sometime before 7:38 p.m. A GPS unit was stolen.

Christmas Ransacking

A family came home from a Christmas party around 10:58 p.m. only to discover that their home in the 10000 block of South Cook Avenue had been burglarized. Police said the family had been gone about six hours. The burglars entered through the door off the back deck by kicking in the door. The blinds had also been drawn when they’re usually left open. Burglars ransacked the bedrooms. About $7,000 worth of diamond and silver jewelry was stolen. The family thinks a friend’s brother who is a drug addict may be responsible, police said. The friend’s brother texted the family around 4:48 p.m. asking if they would be home.

Home Disturbed But Nothing Taken

A home in the 4900 block of West 91st Place was burglarized sometime between Dec. 23 and Dec. 25. When the homeowner returned home around 10:45 p.m. Christmas Day, he noticed that a filing cab in the home officer was open. A hutch in the front was open and some Christmas decorations had been knocked to the floor. Police said a door showed signs of forced entry. The victim searched the house and said that bedroom closets had been disturbed. Nothing appeared to have been taken and electronic equipment in the office and rest of the house appeared intact and undisturbed.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 23

Jewelry Jacked

Burglars busted into a home in the 10000 block of South Harnew Road West sometime before 9:23 p.m. The homeowner came home and discovered items on the living room floor. She went back to her car and called the police. Police said the burglars kicked in a door. Missing are several pieces of jewelry, including an engagement ring, an heirloom wedding ring, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and watches.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 14

Thieves Walk Off With New Shoes

A 27-year-old man who had not been home for several days reported that his apartment in the 4200 block of West 95th Street. Police said the circuit breaker had been switched off. Burglars swiped two TVs and a Playstation. Two pairs of new shoes had also been removed from their boxes in the bedroom. There were no signs of forced entry.
