POLICE BLOTTER: Gang Graffiti on Toadstools, Intoxicated Prowler, Stolen Patio Furniture

Oak Lawn police reports, October 28-29.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 29

Stolen Patio Furniture

A homeowner came home after being out of town for several weeks only to discover that someone had swiped her patio furniture from her home on the 8900 block of South 52nd Avenue. Two chairs, a love seat and a table are missing. The homeowner told police the pieces are heavy and that it would take two people to move them. The furniture was last seen on Oct. 8. She believes the pieces were taken for scrap.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28

Gang Graffiti in Park

Police found gang graffiti, possibly from the Latin Kings, written in black marker on the toadstools at Wolfe Park at 5190 W. 107th St. around 4:30 p.m.. There were two five-point crowns drawn on the playground equipment.

Intoxicated Prowler

A possible prowler was reported trying to enter a home on the 10000 block of South Kostner Avenue around 3:47 a.m. The homeowner was awake listening to music when she heard the front door knob rattle as if someone were trying to open it. She looked out her bedroom window and saw a man, later identified as Fabian Lopez, 20, of Tinley Park, walking from the front door toward the backyard. The homeowner alerted her husband who said he heard the rear storm door open. He opened the back door and asked Lopez what he was doing. The husband told police that Lopez appeared to be highly intoxicated, reports said. Police said that Lopez walked away without saying anything. The alleged prowler continued walking northbound on Kostner, and then began to jog eastbound on 99th Street. Police caught up Lopez and detained him. The husband positively identified him as the person lurking around their house, reports said. Lopez was charged with criminal trespassing.

Police report information is provided by the Oak Lawn Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.

COMMENTS WILL APPEAR AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN APPROVED.

Wolfe Park at 5190 W. 107th St. has been and will continue to be a hang out for teens as long as the basketball court is there. Most of the teens that play there and hang around there are not from Oak Lawn. The local kids are afraid to play there or get chased away by the older kids. Take it down and expand the play ground.

Thank you for the constructive comment, Rich. I hear the same thing about Lawn Manor Park.

Did you stop to ask them where they live? Did you poll the local kids about where they're afraid to play? I know in my day I would travel miles and miles to play basketball. Well no, actually I went to the local park. I guess the kids that drew gang signs in my cozy neighborhood were from out of town. Again, no, they were just stupid kids who thought it was cool or funny to freak out the old folks and draw gang signs on the slide. How many kids have you chased off your lawn today?
I say we build a giant wall to keep outsiders out with checkpoints where we have to show that we live in Oak Lawn. That worked in the past, why cant it work now?

Until there are rules only residents can use facilities there's not much you can do....Worthbrook on 88th and Ridgeland was over run by nonresidents on some days.. All you have to do is check the stickers on the cars parked in the lot and behind Curves..When my boys were younger they used to go to the skate park there and would mention how bad it was getting there.. A few calls to your trustee and the police will have them visit the park more frequently..This will chase them away for awhile but then start calling again..It's your neighborhood and you have to watch it!!

Really? Can we do that?

One of those horrible kids playing basketball might be a star someday that you'll want his autograph from, and he'll comment that he played in Oak Lawn at Wolfe park when he was a kid getting in a lot of practice. Never know, it could happen.
Hank Scorpio November 12, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Oh please. Like there would ever be a a star basketball player that lived outside Oak Lawn but went to an Oak Lawn school. And on top of that, one who might have played basketball at a park within walking distance of said school. Next you'll make up some story about how this imaginary star had his shoes stolen from the school and how he rebuilt the gym there. I must be the only sane person left in Oak Lawn.

Hank. Glad you were able to walk to park and play BB in " the day ". Not what happens now. On any given sunny day Laramie at 106th Street looks like a parking lot for older kids that drive in from other areas to play ball and " hang out ". If they are driving, they are at least 17 -18 years old . I also know families with young kids that won't let their kids even go to the new play ground without adult supervision.
I do agree with you that a better police presence would help.

Funny, I ride my bike on the paths around Wolfe Park and never see any of these trouble makers you speak of. It's pretty sad that parents are so afraid of the outside world that they wont let their kids go out and play. You'd think with all these horrible things happening at the local parks, Patch would find something a little more noteworthy to report on. You know, like actual gang violence instead of someone writing on a bench. Please, continue to be afraid. Be very afraid.

Re: Mother 24's final comment on food handlers hand washing, is there an ordinance requiring hotRead More water in restrooms.? Many have only cold water in both faucets or verrrryyyy slow to respond hot water faucets. This should be a point of inspection for the health inspector (s.) Phinnigin

Re:Phinnigin. I agree!! Most establishments do not have hot water in the restrooms!!! However, whyRead More can't restaurants install hand sanitizer behind the counter? The Popeye's in Burbank has a hand sanitizer installed behind the counter, but honestly, the employees hardly ever use it, which is why, after a horrible experience at that location last July, I have not patronized ANY Popeye's since!!!
