POLICE BLOTTER: 'Some People Call Me Maurice,' 50-Yard Dine-and-Dash

Oak Lawn police reports, February 18 through February 23.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23

‘Some People Call Me Maurice’

A 34-year-old man reported that a suspicious person who called himself Maurice came to his door and asked for money around 7 p.m. Maurice said his wife was delivering a baby at Northwestern Hospital and had locked himself out of his apartment. The man said Maurice needed money to get to the hospital. Police said the man drove Maurice to an ATM at 95th Street and Keeler Avenue, where he withdrew $20 and gave it to Maurice. He dropped Maurice off at an apartment building where he said he lived. The man said Maurice did not threaten him and that he gave Maurice the money out of generosity. Maurice was described as a black male around 35 years old, six-feet-tall, and weighing 200 pounds. He was last seen near an apartment building on the 9500 block of South Kolin Avenue.

50-Yard Dine-and-Dash

A party of six ran up a $44 bill at Denny’s, 9217 S. Cicero Ave. and slipped out of the restaurant without paying. The server told police that two men and four women entered the restaurant and sat down in a corner booth around 5:15 p.m. About 30 minutes later, after they had finished eating, two women in their party left to use the restroom. The others left the restaurant, telling the server the two women in the restroom would pay the check. Police said the diners pulled their car up to the front door and parked in the fire lane. The two women left the bathroom and went to meet the others in the car. The server ran outside to get the plate number, but it was registered to another make of car. The car was last seen heading northbound on Cicero Avenue.
