Police Investigating Fatal Driveway Accident Involving Husband and Wife - UPDATED

The accident occurred in the 10800 block of LaPorte Avenue in Oak Lawn in what police term a "terrible tragedy."

In what police are calling a tragic accident, an Oak Lawn man was hit by a car and killed in the driveway of his home Friday afternoon. 

The man, who is in his 70s, was returning home with his wife to their home on the 10800 block of LaPorte Avenue around noon, Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann said. 

The man got out of his car to open the gate to their driveway when his wife, thinking he was clear of the car backed in, running him over, Kaufmann said.

He became trapped under the car and died at the scene. His wife was not injured, a police news release said.

The incident does not appear to be criminal in nature and seems to be a "tragic accident," Kauffman said.

Part of LaPorte Avenue near 109th Street is closed to traffic. The home is across from Park Lawn School and Activity Center which remains open and accessible.  

The Oak Lawn Police traffic unit is investigating. Police do not anticipate any charges to be filed as a result of this tragic accident.

"The Village of Oak Lawn wishes to extend condolences to the family and friends of the victim due to this terrible tragedy," a police news release said.
