Police: Man Said He Was Drugged After Vomitting in Jail

A Decatur man kept falling asleep and vomiting in lock-up after being brought in on a DUI charge, police said.

A Decatur man who complimented police on the décor of the jail was charged Oct. 29 with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful use of a weapon and various traffic violations.

initially spotted Kevin Cox, 46, of Decatur driving a white truck that was starting and stopping in traffic on 95th Street and driving 5 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to the report.

Police said he ignored their directions to pull over until he came to a stop at a dead-end street at 68th Court. Officers ordered Cox to get out of the truck and kneel down with his hands behind his head and he complied.

When Cox got out of the truck, police said he was sweating profusely. He was then placed in handcuffs. While searching the vehicle, police found a pair of brass knuckles on a shelf under the radio, they said.

Asked why he didn’t stop, Cox said he dropped a burning cigarette on his pants and was looking for a good place to stop, the report said.

Cox also denied having illegal drugs and gave police permission to search, according to the report. Bridgeview police arrived with a trained police dog. According to the report, the dog indicated the presence of drugs in the passenger area, but no drugs were found in the truck.

Cox explained that he was on medication for an infected mouth and asthma, according to the report. Police said he failed field sobriety tests after they took off the cuffs, and kept falling asleep.

Police said they had to yell at Cox several times to wake up after arriving at the Oak Lawn police station. He volunteered to take a urine test but he didn’t have to go yet, and requested a glass of water, the report said.

After drinking three cups of water, police said that Cox fell asleep while holding the cup. When he woke up, he told police he liked "what they did with the place" and that it was an improvement since the last time he was in the jail. Police said he had never before been in the Oak Lawn jail.

According to the report, Cox told police they were right about him driving under the influence, and so was “the other guy” in the truck, although police said that Cox was alone.

After vomiting in the jail, police grew concerned about Cox’s welfare and called the Paramedics arrived and took the man to

The report said that Cox’s blood sugar tests came back normal, police said. Doctors administered Narvan and Cox immediately perked up. Police said that Narvan only works when there is a presence of opiates in the system.

Cox refused to take blood and urine tests for drugs. He said that someone had drugged him, but couldn’t provide a name to police, the report said.

Hospital discharge papers showed a final diagnosis of opiate abuse with the presence of cocaine, police said.

Charges were filed against Cox, who has a Dec. 7 court date in Bridgeview.
