Police Say Burglars Conned Their Way Into Elderly Couple's Home

Ruse burglars posing as workers for an electric company conned their way into an elderly couple's home on the 5100 block of West Wolfe Drive, according to an Oak Lawn police report.

A 79-year-old woman told police a Hispanic male with a stocky build, approximately 50 years old, wearing a yellow hard had appeared at her door in the middle of the afternoon Feb. 1.

The man told the victim he needed to enter her house to "check the power," according to the report. The victim noticed a white SUV parked on her driveway that did not have any markings on it associated with a utility company.

When asked what company he worked for, the man replied "for the city," police said.

The woman's husband was home and sitting in the living room. She told police the man used what appeared to be an electrician's device to check an outlet.

The couple accompanied the man into the basement after he told them he needed to check downstairs. While in the basement, the victim heard footsteps upstairs.

She went to the top of the stairs where another man blocked her path. The victim also told police that there may have been a third person in the house.

The man blocking her way told her "don't push me, I have a sore leg" after she demanded that he move out of her way, according to reports.

The men left in the white van, and the couple then called police.

Police saw tire tracks in the snow on the couple's driveway. The couple checked their house and nothing appeared to be missing. The victim thinks that she could identify the two men if she saw them again.
