Police Seek Suspect In Thursday's TCF Bank Heist

For the second time in less than a week an Oak Lawn Bank was robbed, this time a bank inside a supermarket.

said that at 9:18 a.m. Thursday a black male in his 20s walked up to the counter of TCF Bank inside the Jewel Food Store at 8801 S. Ridgeland. The robber passed a note to the teller implying that he was armed, but no weapon was displayed. The teller complied handing the robber an undetermined amount of cash.

The bandit retrieved his note and fled on foot out the south entrance to Jewel. He is believed to have run east from there.

Witnesses described the suspected robber as a black male in his early 20s, around five-feet-nine-inches tall, with dreadlocks and wearing black sunglasses. Police said the man was dressed in a dark grey jacket with white stripes on the sleeves and blue jeans. He remains at large.

A resident who lives behind Jewel described a person matching the robber’s description getting into an older model, burgundy Chrysler.

“We assume him to be our subject,” Division Chief Roger Pawlowski said, spokesman for the Oak Lawn Police Department. “He got into the driver’s side and drove away.”

The man did not attempt to conceal his face when he approached the bank teller. “He walked in with his face showing,” Pawlowski added.

Pawlowski said that robberies of banks located inside supermarkets are not as rare as people think.

“We’ve had them in the past,” he said. “We do know that robbers often like smaller branches more than big banks. I can only surmise robbers often like smaller banks more than main banks because of extra security and better security systems. Then again in a food store you have a lot of people.”

The FBI has taken over the investigation. No surveillance footage from the bank is available.
