Retail Theft Charges for Woman Caught Pilfering Wine

Security video shows Susan B. Rooney, of Hometown, heisting wine from Walgreens, police say.

A 47-year-old woman was charged with retail theft after police said she pinched wine from the Walgreens store at 10639 S. Cicero Ave.

Approximately a month ago, Walgreens employees began finding empty four packs of Sutter’s Wine throughout the store. After studying video on the dates the wine went missing, Walgreens employees identified Susan F. Rooney, of Hometown, and decided to notify the next time she was in the store, the report said.

Police said that on Aug. 11, Rooney entered the store and went directly to the liquor aisle. A Walgreen’s employee walked up to Rooney and noticed her carrying a plastic bag containing four small wine bottles, which were out of their packaging.

As Rooney began to leave the store, the employee followed her, calling to another employee to help stop her.

According to the report, when Rooney heard the call for help, she turned around and handed the bag full of bottles to the employee and said she would never do it again before exiting the store. The second employee followed Rooney after she left the store, while the other called police.

Officers found Rooney in the 10800 block of Lacrosse Ave. After police said they viewed several tapes of her previous wine swipes, she was taken into custody on a charge of retail theft.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2 in the Bridgeview Courthouse.
