TCF Bank Robbed, Cops Nab Suspect - Updated 1X

Robbery suspect found hiding on roof of bank along with bank's money, police say.

Oak Lawn police arrested a man who was found hiding on the roof of a bank that he had allegedly robbed Friday morning.

Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann said that at 11:02 a.m., a teller from the TCF Bank at 9801 S. Cicero Ave. called 911 to report that the bank was being robbed.

The teller said that a male black armed with a gun was demanding money from the tellers. The robber ran out of the bank and was seen by a witness climbing a tree at the rear of the bank, Kaufman said.

Police surrounded the bank and traffic on Cicero was rerouted for 30 minutes. Two officers went to the top of the Eight Oaks Apartments adjacent to the bank, where police saw a man hiding on the roof and ordered him to surrender.

Oak Lawn firefighters arrived with a ladder to help the robbery suspect down from the roof. The bank’s money was scattered on the roof, Kaufmann said.

Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann said there were no injuries to bank employees, police officers or the alleged robber in this morning's robbery of TCF Bank in Oak Lawn.

"The tellers were shaken up by the incident but everyone is OK," Kaufmann said in an email.

OLPD believed only one person was involved in the robbery, a black male described as six feet tall.

Oak Lawn resident Wanda McCue was on her way to the Speedway gas station across the street from TCF when a friend called to tell her that the bank was being robbed.

"I was on my way to Speedway anyway," McCue said. "The police were on the roof [of the apartment building next door] and they all had their guns drawn."

The Oak Lawn Fire Department brought the bank robbery suspect down from the bank roof on a ladder, where he was taken into custody by police.

The man arrested in the robbery is on his way to appear before a federal judge where he will be formally charged Friday afternoon, said Special Agent Sean MacManus of the Chicago Bureau of the FBI.
