Bob Streit Is Sick of Talking About the Brunswick Zone

The Oak Lawn Village Board votes not to rescind an earlier decision to extend the Brunswick Zone's weekend operations, provided the bowling center continues to follow safety measures after a gang shooting in its parking lot from a year ago.

There has been much discussion of last year’s gang shooting in the Brunswick Zone parking lot at 103rd Street and Cicero Avenue.

Trustee Tom Phelan, in whose Dist. 6 the shooting occurred, has been strident in his arguments to keep Brunswick’s early closing on Fridays and Saturdays. In exchange, Brunswick has to continue following safety measures implemented by the village.

Phelan called Brunswick’s math “a misrepresentation of facts.”

Trustee Bob Streit (Dist. 3) quickly put an end to another potential village board filibuster saying that he was sick of talking about it.

“I honestly think we beat this issue to death,” Streit said. “I think it’s an unfortunate discussion that we’ve had over and over at this board table.”

Streit said he has visited the Brunswick Zone many times since the safety measures were put into place to keep non-bowling gang members out, and “I can report that I witnessed an atmosphere conducive with what you’d expect at a bowling alley" and not the menacing nightclub atmosphere described before the shooting.

“All this talk has probably had an adverse effect,” Streit said. “I’d like to see Brunswick remain an effective core business in our community.”

With that endorsement, village trustees voted 4-2 not to rescind their first vote allowing Brunswick to expand its weekend operations.
