Lipinski Announces Federal Assistance for Flood Victims

Homes and businesses affected by last month's flooding and winds may qualify for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Federal assistance may be on the way for local residents and businesses hit by last month’s flooding.

Congressman Dan Lipinski announced Monday that constituents of Illinois’s Third District residing in Will, DuPage and Cook counties are now eligible to apply for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Lipinski was part of an Illinois delegation urging President Obama to back the governor’s request for federal aid following torrential rainstorms and straight-line winds that damaged homes and businesses across the state.

Last Friday, the president signed a disaster declaration offering federal aid. The declaration covers those affected by the severe storms and winds between April 16 and May 5.

Those applying for federal assistance will be asked to provide insurance, damage and financial information. A FEMA inspector will assess the damage at the home or business. Should the applicant qualify for federal assistance, a check should be available within the week for direct deposit in the applicant’s bank.

Even those who think they don’t qualify are strongly encouraged to apply for assistance from FEMA. The federal agency may be able to pick up costs for damages not covered by insurance.

“I know many Third District residents suffered serious damage from last month’s flooding and continue to deal with the aftermath,” Lipinski said. “It has been made clear to me that the magnitude of the damage and the recovery efforts will be beyond the means of state and local budgets. Federal assistance is clearly necessary. I am glad the president heeded our call to make aid available.”

FEMA, which administers the assistance program, has set up a toll-free telephone number 800-621-FEMA (3362) or 800-462-7585 (TTY) for victims to apply for assistance. Registration can also be done online at disasterassistance.gov.
