Robert’s Rules, Ethics and New Walgreen’s Top Village Board Agenda

Like shortened hemlines and narrowing neckties, Oak Lawn Village Board members will rehash past topics and discussions on tonight’s (Tuesday’s) “everything old is new again” agenda.

Here’s what we’ll be watching:

  • Conflict of Interest disclosure -- As part of her campaign promise to bring ethics reform to Oak Lawn government and perhaps put an end to some of the bickering, Mayor Sandra Bury wants to instigate a new conflicts-of-interest disclosure policy. Elected village officials and those appointed to village commissions would be required to disclose any potential conflicts in which they and/or their family members may stand to gain personally, financially or otherwise, from village business.

  • Walgreens On the Move -- The stand-alone Walgreen’s store at 95th and Melvina may be moving down the street into new digs provided Oak Lawn trustees approve several referrals and ordinance recommendations by the village’s planning and development commission. Walgreens is asking that a residential-zoned parcel at 9512 S. McVicker Ave. be rezoned for commercial development. Plans are to knock down First Midwest Bank and build a smaller bank, plus an expanded Walgreen’s with a drive-through lane for prescription pickup.

  • Robert’s Rules -- Trustees Bob Streit (Dist. 3) and Carol Quinlan (Dist. 5) have requested, in writing, that the village board revisit board decorum and meeting procedures in Robert’s Rules of Order.

  • Village Records and Adjudication/Municipal Towing -- Two more written board items requested by Trustees Streit and Quinlan, possibly involving recordings of past village board meetings and executives sessions. We’re not sure what “adjudication/municipal towing” is all about.

  • What’s not on the agenda: Fork-bending with his mind by former trustee Tom Phelan; extemporaneous speechifying by Trustee Bob Streit.

The Oak Lawn Village Board is scheduled to meet once more this summer at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Village Hall, 9446 S. Raymond Ave. The bi-monthly meetings for July 23 and August 27 are canceled for the summer. The meetings are free and open to the public.
