RoboPRIDE, the Queen of Peace Robotics Club Gears Up for Competition

Burbank, IL –March 3, 2014 – RoboPride has completed building this year’s robot, Etabot, for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. The team had until February 18th (their Stop Build Day) to design, build and program the robot to perform specific tasks based on this year’s rules. At midnight they were required to stop working and “bag and tag” their robot.

This year’s game is called Aerial Assist. This competition is different than previous years because for the first time points are based on teamwork versus individual scores. This year’s competition is played by two competing Alliances of three Robots each on a flat 25’ x 54’ foot field, straddled by a lighting truss suspended just over five feet above the floor. The objective is to score as many balls in goals as possible during a 2 minute and 30 second match. Your points increase the more you pass the ball to your Alliance members. The more Alliances score their ball in their goals, the more points their alliance receives.

The engineering aspect of the Robotics club ties in closely with the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) focus of the school. This is as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. RoboPRIDE is lucky to have excellent mentors for the team that include parents, alum and other engineers.  The competition for our region will be held on April 3, 4 and 5 at the UIC Pavilion.
