Award-winning historian and author Robert Girardi provides an overview of Illinois' pivotal role to the Union War effort during the American Civil War. Though no major battles were
fought on Illinois soil, Illinois sent more than 250,000 men and 53 generals to the front. Illinois also provided vital social, political and material aid.
