FOOTBALL FRIDAY: 'Wherever Your Body Goes, Your Horn Goes'

I've discovered that I like high school football.

I learned a lot about high school football last week hanging around Dr. Riordan at the All I know is I would not want to cross Dr. Riordan’s path on a Monday morning if my team lost. The man is passionate about winning and that’s putting it nicely.

Last night I drove over to and caught a few minutes of band practice. My dog was with me, so if the camera is a little shaky in the accompanying video, that is why. We like to call it being "Patchy."

The band was rehearsing a medley of Jackson 5 songs. The kids played “I Want You Back” and “I’ll Be There,” which is not an easy song to play. The band director, Chuck Martin, was helping band members with their Motown moves.

“Wherever your body goes, your horn goes,” Mr. Martin yelled at the band through a bullhorn from the top of the bleachers.

He was a lot nicer about it than Joe Jackson was rehearsing the Jackson brothers in the family living room in Gary, Ind., who was always threatening to throw Marlon out of the group.

Football fever is gripping Oak Lawn like a case of Legionnaire’s Disease. Patch will be covering the Brother Rice-Marist varsity game and visiting Richards High School on Friday. As of Thursday, we were still working on the Oak Lawn-Oswego East game.

Here are the Friday matchups. Check back with Patch frequently for the latest scores, game coverage, photos and video.

  • The Rundown: George “Skip” Pearson III, probably the most diehard Bulldogs fan that I know wrote to Patch this week: “For the first time in 22 years, the Richards Bulldogs will play the Morris Redskins. Not since the 1989 championship game (which Richards won) have these two teams played against each other. “Morris will bring the town to Richards. It is here. Game on. GO BULLDOGS GO,” Skip said. Both teams are 1-0, so expect the turf to fly.

  • The Rundown: The Spartans are off to a great start after their 21-17 win last week over Niles North High School. "A lot of the boys on varsity are juniors who have been playing football together since 7th-8th grade and have formed a great team together with the seniors.  Last year their sophomore team was 8-1, with the only loss to Richards HS.”

  • The Rundown: It’s the “Pulaski Road Super Bowl” according to the Southtown Star. Both teams are 1-0 and will play in the Red and White Stadium. Chad Weiler, son of the , a St. Laurence High School alum, and the director of business operations for the Village of Oak Lawn,  assures me that this is the game of the weekend. Well see if it’s a or a reenactment of the Crusades in this bitter neighborhood rivalry.
