They’re planning to paint the gym purple.
And give away free popcorn.
Oak Lawn Community High School officials will play host to their fifth annual “Paint the Gym Purple” event on Friday (Jan. 27) in conjunction with a boys and girls varsity basketball doubleheader against South Suburban Red rival Reavis.
The girls game begins at 5:30 p.m., with the boys game to follow at about 7 p.m.
The event is part of Oak Lawn’s Annual Relay for Life Campaign and is designed generate cancer awareness at the school and throughout the community. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
The hitch: Students, staff and fans are encouraged to wear “purple” to the doubleheader and will be admitted free if they play along with the promotion. Also, the Oak Lawn Athletic Booster Club will provide each participating guest with a free bag of popcorn.
A limited number of “Paint the Gym Purple” T-shirts will be on sale in the Spartan lobby prior to the tip-off of the first game. Oak Lawn students may purchase T-shirts in advance in the student cafeteria. T-shirts will be on sale during lunch periods Tuesday (Jan. 24) to Thursday (Jan. 26). Cost is $6.
Oak Lawn Community High School has played host to a Relay for Life event for nine years and has raised more than $500,000 for cancer research during that time, according to Tammy Tyeptanar and T.J. Zuzga, teachers and relay coordinators. This year’s OLCHS Relay for Life event is scheduled for Saturday, May 12.
