The Skinny: For a while, Marist was chasing Eisenhower during its 76-67 boys basketball victory Wednesday night in the Marist Holiday Invitational. Marist trailed 40-39 at halftime after Eisenhower's Mike White Jr. banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the RedHawks' Jack Barry drained a three-pointer just seconds into the second half to spark a 6-0 run and a 46-40 lead which Marist would never relinquish.
Eisenhower cut the deficit to 63-57 on a three-pointer by Nick Curta with 6:00 left, but the RedHawks wouldn't allow the Cardinals to get any closer. Marist turned to four corners late in the fourth quarter to eat away more than a minute of the clock and by the time Eisenhower got the ball back it was trailing 71-60 with just 1:27 remaining.
Patch’s MVP: L.J. McIntosh handled much of the pressure caused by Eisenhower's frantic pace and scored 19 points.
Key Stats: Eisenhower sharp shooter Tyrone Terrell, who scored 50 points in a game against St. Laurence earlier in the tournament, picked up his third foul with 2:42 left in the first quarter and didn't return until the second half. He finished with seven points. Marist had four scorers in double figures and overcame a 12-turnover first quarter.
Marist Leaders: Nic Weishar (20 points, 13 rebounds), L.J. McIntosh (19 points, 5 rebounds), Lexus Williams (15 points, 6 rebounds), Jack Barry (3 three-pointers and 13 total points).
Eisenhower Leaders: Dustan Lewis (14 points), Mike White Jr. (10 points, 4 rebounds), Olajuwon Prude (8 points).
Quotable I: "It was our seventh game in 15 days, so we've been going just about every other day," Marist coach Gene Nolan said. "Our stamina was good, which was important because Eisenhower had guys coming in every two minutes."
Quotable II: "They came out (in the third quarter) and played the way we did in the first half," Eisenhower coach Matt Curta said. "We went up one (at halftime) and then in a matter of seconds (in the third quarter) the game changed and now we're chasing."
Team Records: Marist is 9-3. Eisenhower is 3-8.
What’s Next: Marist travels to Centralia's Holiday Tournament and opens against Salem at 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 28, while Eisenhower heads to Hinsdale South's Holiday Tournament and will open with Metea Valley at 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 27.
