Bowl for Reading helps homeless CPS students

Have fun bowling and help homeless Chicago Public School students at the same time. Chicago Family Directions (CFD) will be holding Bowl for Reading from 6-9 p.m.,  Friday, June 1 at Brunswick Zone in Oak Lawn.

At this fun event, participants will bowl, socialize and browse the silent auction with all proceeds going to support tutoring expenses for fall 2012. Chicago Family directions is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity providing, at no cost, consistent, long-term tutoring to homeless and impoverished K-12 students in the Chicago Public Schools to prepare them for college, careers and an adult life without homelessness.

Considering homeless students are twice as likely to score lower on standardized tests, providing one on one tutoring to these students gives them a huge advantage. Research indicates that 43 percent of homeless students repeat a grade, 25 percent are placed in special education, and 50 percent are failing academically (Bassuk & Rubin, 1987). Other data reveal that only one-third of homeless students read at grade level compared to more than half of their same-aged peers (Rescorla, Parker, & Stolley, 1991).
