Gimme 5: Lucas Grabs Hold of Football Reins at Oak Lawn

Spartans' new football coach Sean Lucas talks about why Oak Lawn is a good fit for him and how the summer has progressed for his team.

As the summer zips past, the Oak Lawn Spartan football team continues to adjust to its new coach, Sean Lucas.

Lucas, however, is familiar with the Spartans, having spent the last two seasons with the sophomores and the freshmen. “It really helps knowing what facilities we have and knowing what kind of support we’re going to get,” he said.

“We’ve had good parental support and good administrative support. Obviously, that’s going to continue. Taking over the job, that’s not foreign to me. (Athletic Director) Will Dwyer has been a tremendous help so far. Everyone in the community has been a big help so far.”

Lucas played high school football at Providence Catholic, where the majority of his 10 seasons as a football coach have been spent. He earned his undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois, before heading to St. Francis in Joliet to get a masters degree. Lucas teaches physical education, health and driver's education at Oak Lawn.

Heading into the season, he said his top priority is implementing the offense and defense, while growing as a staff and team is his second priority.

“We also want to work on team building,” Lucas said. “The more we care about each other as a staff and as a team with our players, the more successful we’re going to be.”
