Gimme 5: Oak Lawn's Volanti the 'Officer' of Spartans' Infield
Senior Matt Volanti making up for lost time after finally cracking starting lineup as Oak Lawn's catcher.
Oak Lawn senior catcher Matt Volanti waited a while for his chance at playing catcher for the Spartans. Now, he’s making the most of his opportunity.
As a junior, Volanti waited in the wings behind two-time all-conference catcher Chris Cascarano. “He didn’t get the innings that probably could have benefitted him,” Oak Lawn coach Brian Clifton said.
Now, Volanti is the starting catcher.

He began playing catcher when he was 10 years old. He enjoys the challenge of playing a very difficult position.
Next year, he’s looking at St. Xavier and North Park to play baseball, and he wants to study criminal justice. He’s known that he wants to be a police officer since he was 8.

“It’s one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do and never looked back in wanting to do it,” Volanti said.
