When it comes to working out, Cyndi Andrews has done it all. Andrews, a nutritionist, has done marathons and duathlons. Yet, the triathlon has eluded her because of the swimming involved.
Andrews, however, can now cross the triathlon off her list after she completed the Make a Good Impression in 2011 Annual Indoor Triathlon at Evergreen Park High School on Sunday.
“Swimming is going to be my new challenge,” said Andrews, who is 44 and from Chicago. “This is kind of a way to kick off my new challenge–not to fear the water.”
The event was sponsored by Sen. Edward Maloney and Mayor James Sexton of Evergreen Park, as well as EPHS and the Village of Evergreen Park. It featured 81 participants ranging in ages from 18 to 72 years old.
All athletes swam, then biked, then ran, in that order. Each stage lasted 15 minutes with a 5-minute break and athletes were scored based on how far they biked/ran and how many laps they did in the pool.
This was the sixth year for the event, and, according to Brian Maloney, event co-organizer and son of Sen. Maloney, officials even had to turn some people away because of time constraints.
“It’s a good way to kick-start the spring in terms of exercise,” Maloney said.
Tom Liston, 54 years old and a chemist from Mt. Greenwood, completed the triathlon for the third time.
“I wanted to beat last year’s times,” Liston said. “I did for the bike but not for the swimming or the running. But it was still good, a good workout and lot of fun.”
The proceeds from the event go to SERVE (Special Education Resources Valuing Everyone). Maloney said officials expected to be able to provide $2,000 to the charity. SERVE provides scholarships for college and vocational school for kids in Evergreen Park with special needs.
Angela Anderson, a 42-year-old Chicago resident, signed up for the triathlon with her friends who workout together at XSport in Chicago. The group cheered Anderson on as she finished up her run.
“I feel good," Anderson said. "I feel like I have more energy now."
