It's Spring! Get Your Clubs and Head to Stony Creek

After you get back, tell us what you think. Leave your review of the course and clubhouse on Patch.

Stony Creek Golf Course, which opened in 1994, was designed by Carl Getz in the mid-1980s to accompany the large practice facility and driving range already on the site. In the past 17 years, the look at Stony Creek hasn’t changed much in terms of the course layout.

In a message on the Stony Creek website, Course Superintendent Tim Scott said the turf is still recovering from last season's drought.

"We plan in April to aerify and fertilize greens, tees and fairways to keep up the health of these areas," he says. "This process will make the plants stronger to handle both the weather and traffic from golfers and carts."

The course hasn't changed in layout, but Scott's crew in recent years has tried to make it more challenging.

“What we’ve been doing is constantly adding trees in different areas and landscaping,” Scott told Patch last season in a feature on the par-65 course. “We’ve added over 200 more trees to the golf course to fill in areas that we felt were needed.”

Stony Creek tends to feature large, undulating greens that often give golfers trouble.

The 10th hole at Stony Creek is the only par-5 on the course, but from the back tees it plays a hefty 518 yards. Even the long hitters will have difficulty hitting the green in two.

The 14th hole is a perfect example of a hole that can prove difficult if golfers don't find the fairway. The 370-yard, par-4 hole features a slight dogleg right, making it tough for people with a natural draw. Tee shots from the back tees must cross over a creek and stay in between a pair of bunkers on each side of the fairway.

Stony Creek features eight par-3s that range from 118 to 210 yards off the back tees. This gives golfers plenty of opportunities to hit a number of different iron shots.

What's New at Stony Creek?

The folks at Park Lawn are volunteering at the clubhouse this year.

"Park Lawn is thrilled to have the opportunity to volunteer at Stony Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn. We will be assisting the staff with the maintenance and upkeep of the Dining and Banquet areas," according to a write-up on JJsList.com, where businesses and people with disabilities connect. "During the summer months, our volunteer duties will increase to include the outdoor Patio. We look forward to embarking on this new volunteer endeavor and strive for continued growth and success in the community."
