Rare is the occasion when anyone reaches perfection in any endeavor.
When Oak Lawn sophomore Ryan Campin bowled a perfect game during a practice session, he also served notice of a perfect storm that was brewing for the Spartans.
His 300 game was the kick-start to a season that saw the Oak Lawn boys bowling team go on to win the Hinsdale South Sectional and advance downstate for the fifth time in the last six years. Campin placed 43rd and fellow sophomore Ken VandeWerken followed hot on his heels in 50th place during the two-day competition at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
Earlier, Campin and VandeWerken earned all-conference honors. Senior Chris Duran placed fourth in the sectional with a six-game pinfall total of 1,338. Matt Taraba, Cody Marek, Mike Pontrelli, Dan Pfister and Adam Quiroz also were part of the Spartans’ state-tournament lineup.
Six of the eight will return next season—all but the two seniors, Duran and Taraba—and they hope to be using new equipment that comes as a result of Sunday’s Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser at Palos Lanes, located on 111th Street and Southwest Highway.
The event, which also serves as a celebration of the Spartans’ season, will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person for lunch, three games of bowling and a raffle ticket. Prizes range from an outdoor grill with cover donated by Home Depot of Oak Lawn to a $150 gift card from ABT Electronics and a bowling ball donated by Brunswick Lanes of Oak Lawn.
Cost is $10 for individuals who want to show their support and have lunch but not bowl.
“We want to raise money for next year to purchase bowling equipment and allow us to provide assistance to our bowlers for new bowling balls and other personal equipment,” Oak Lawn coach Kevin McKeown said. “We also want to raise money for our program to contribute to the school’s athletic and activities fund to help provide money to our school’s financial needs next year and into the future.”
McKeown is hoping for a turnout of 125 or more people for the Oak Lawn boys bowling fundraiser. For more information, contact him at email@example.com
