Oak Lawn Spring Sports Award Winners Double Up in Memorable Moments

Badminton standouts Amanda Sweis and Eliana LaSpina notched a top-32 finish at the IHSA state tournament. Boys tennis aces Jason Klaer and Rami Arabi won the doubles title at the Sandburg Sectional and advanced downstate, too.

During the spring season, Oak Lawn Community High School opponents found trouble in doubles competition.

Amanda Sweis and Eliana LaSpina split four matches in the IHSA girls state badminton tournament and returned home with a top-32 finish. The two earlier led the Spartans to a third-place finish in the Andrew Sectional.

In boys tennis, Jason Klaer and Rami Arabi won the doubles championship at the Sandburg Sectional and led Oak Lawn to a fifth-place finish. The two scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kingsley Bernardo and Kristian Bernardo of Jacobs at the IHSA state tournament.

And the two doubles teams headed the list of Oak Lawn spring sports award winners. The list:

Badminton: Sweis and Rebecca Kampick were named co-MVPs. Reem Bishawi won the Sportsmanship Award.

Baseball: Kyle Smith was the MVP. Brian Barnhouse and Joe Gray were the Sportsmanship Award winners. Smith, Barnhouse, Bob Kametas, Nick Mozwecz, Mike Yacko and Alec Barnhart were all-conference selections. Mike Postregna won the Baseball Scholarship.

Girls Soccer: Kinga Gil was the MVP. Maddie Heredia won the Sportsmanship Award. Gil was an all-sectional honorable mention selection. All-conference picks were Gil, Megan Pacetti and Juliet Torres.

Softball: Rachel Burba and Tiffanie Triner were co-MVPs. Jamie Schuld was the Sportsmanship Award winner. Burba and Mercedes Leon earned all-conference honors.

Boys Tennis: Klaer and Arabi were team MVPs. Kevin Rodriguez was the Sportsmanship Award winner. Klaer and Arabi won the conference championship at first doubles and advanced to the IHSA state tournament.

Spartan Fishing Club: Ben Masek was the MVP. Michael Hentgen was the Sportsmanship Award winner.

Track: Vicky Jones was the girls' MVP. Shelly Williamson was the Sportsmanship Award winner. Eric Lindelsee was the boys' MVP. T.J. Michaels and Joe Martinez were Sportsmanship Award winners. Erin Pratl (pole vault), Lindelsee (3,200 meters) and Martinez (pole vault) were all-conference selections.

Boys Volleyball: Marc Hansen was the team MVP. Ramadan Matariyeh won the Sportsmanship Award. Hansen was an all-conference pick. Sean Dunne earned honorable-mention all-conference honors.
