On to DeKalb: Richards Beats East St. Louis, Advances to State Title Game

The Class 6A state title game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Huskie Stadium.

It will be Bulldog vs. Bulldog next Saturday (Nov. 30) when Richards faces old foe Batavia High School in the Class 6A football finals.

The Bulldogs hung on to win over East St. Louis 7-6, on a blocked punt by Richards senior Savon Robinson in the second quarter. Three plays later, Romeo Johnson scored a 1-yard touchdown, handing the lead to Richards.

The East St. Louis Flyers answered back with an 82-yard run by East St. Louis senior running back Gregory Taylor in the first half.

The Bulldogs defense held strong, keeping the Flyers at bay for the win.

Richards handed Batavia its only defeat this season, a 31-26 Richards victory at Oak Lawn in the second game of the season.

The Bulldogs have also only allowed 12 points during the post-season playoffs.

Next Saturday will be Richards’ first appearance in a state-title game since 2001, when the Bulldogs finished second in Class 6A.

Meanwhile, in Rockford, the Batavia Bulldogs handily beat Rockford-Boylan High School, 38-6.

The Class 6A state title game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Huskie Stadium.
