The Baby Reader, Tornado Relief, Santa Highlight the Week Ahead

A quick look at some local events happening this week.


The Baby Reader

Cradle to the Classroom, a literary outreach program sponsored by Dist. 218 and Dist. 130, is sponsoring a free workshop  at the Oak Lawn Library from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3. "The Baby Reader" teaches parents' strategies on how to raise great readers. Teachers from both districts will lead 30-minute seminars. Parents are welcome to bring their babies and young children to the workshops so they can practice their new skills that night. The Oak Lawn Library is located at 9427 S. Raymond Ave. If you can’t make Tuesday’s seminar, another is being held at the Crestwood Public Library from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. Parents will receive a free baby book.



MONDAY, DECEMBER 2

Santa at Worth Township Center

Santa will be hanging at Worth Township Center from Dec. 2 through Dec. 6, and Dec. 9 through Dec. 13. The big man will be hearing children’s wishes from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Santa has to feed the reindeer. Worth Township Center is located at 11601 S. Pulaski Ave., Alsip.

D123 Winter Concerts and Tornado Relief

The first of Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School’s three winter concerts takes place at 7 p.m. featuring the beginning band students. OLHMS will be accepting monetary donations at each concert to benefit those affected deadly Washington, IL, tornado. The school is working with the Illinois Music Teachers Association and the Washington High School Band Boosters to help replace musical instruments and supplies. Checks should be made payable to WCHS Band Boosters. Monetary donations will be collected at the OLHMS Winter Band Concert on Dec. 13, and the OLHMS Choral Concert on Dec. 17. All concerts start at 7 p.m. OLHMS is located at 5345 W. 99th St.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4

Oak Lawn Chamber Holiday Kick-Off Party and Food Drive

Join the Oak Lawn Lions Club, Cusack Insurance and Advocate Family Care Network for “Business After Hours” at Oak Lawn/Patriot Metra Station from 5-7 p.m. Munch on delicious appetizers and wet your whistle at the Oak Lawn Chamber’s holiday kick-off party. Bring a non-perishable food item for the Lions’ holiday gift baskets for families facing financial difficulty. 5120 S. Museum Drive, in the Metra train station.


THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5

OLHMS Screening: ‘Girl Rising’

Through their own hard work and determination, 11 eighth-grade girls from Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School are hosting a screening of the film documentary Girl Rising. The film examines impoverished young girls throughout the world who lack to simple basic rights, such as education. OLHMS students produced posters, interviews, a newscast and wrote a grant to the D123 Educational Foundation to bring the film to their school. Free. 6:30 p.m. OLHMS, 5345 W. 99th St.
