Weekend Fun: St. Gerald Fest, Katie Quick's CD Release Party, Yoga, Softball AND MORE

St. Gerald Fest and Carnival


One of the South Side's most popular neighborhood parish festivals, St. Gerald Fest and Carnival continues through the weekend after a packed opening night on Thursday.

Parishioners have a special reason to celebrate this year after building the church’s new activity center in record time.St. Gerald Fest offers a weekend of splendid fun, including carnival games and rides, along with raffles, great food and a historic first -- bingo in the new Jonathon Collins Activity Center.

Featured musical acts are Hello Nuvo (8 p.m. Friday); The Hat Guys (7 p.m. Saturday) and Infinity (7 p.m. Sunday).

Fest hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Friday; 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday. St. Gerald's is located at 93rd Street/Southwest Highway and Central Avenue.

Mega-Passes are now $60  and the parish is also selling $20 wristbands for Saturday and Sunday only. For more information, call 708-422-0234.

Friday

West Side Story - Oak Lawn Park District Community Theatre presents West Side Story at the Oak View Center at 4625 W. 110th St., the classic musical about forbidden love between two lovers in rival gangs. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $22 for adults and $21 for seniors and children, 12 and under.


Cirrus Falcon (free concert) - Cirrus Falcon, a Chicagoland band that has been playing together for more than 20 years, will play a free show at 6 p.m. at Circle Park at 3450 W. 97th St. in Evergreen Park.

Megan McDonough at Twisted Q BBQ - Megon McDonough has opened for John Denver, Steve Martin and Harry Chapin, and now she's coming to you. She will appear  at 8 p.m. at Twisted Q BBQ, 2053 Ridge Rd. in Homewood. Cover charge is $12. For more information, read our event listing.

Windy City Thunderbolts Baseball Pet Night - The Windy City Thunderbolts invite you to bring your pet to tonight's game at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $10 and a portion of each advance ticket sale will be donated to Lulu's Locker (pet) Rescue. Saturday

Katie Quick CD Release Party - Katie Quick, Evergreen Park native and country musician, will debut her third album, Endless Road, at 8 p.m. at the Beverly Arts Center on Saturday. Volunteer at the Forest Preserve
 - Volunteer with Friends of the Forest Preserves for a Dan Ryan Woods clean-up from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are asked to meet in the east parking lot on the north side of the Dan Ryan Woods at 87th St. For more information, call 773-398-1187 or email benjamin@fotfp.org.

Yoga in the Park - Get outside and enjoy the peace of nature with Yoga in the Park. Come to Ridge Park, 9625 S. Longwood Ave., at 9 a.m. Saturday with your yoga mat and get ready for some peace of mind. In case of rain, practice will be moved indoors.

Widow Warriors Yoga
- Outdoor yoga not your cup of tea? Come to the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St., at 8:30 a.m. for instruction from Donna Wilkinson. Bring your mat, an empty belly, bare feet and an open mind.

Jr. Book Club Discussion - Was the summer reading season not enough? If your child wants more out of their books, encourage them to join the Jr. Book Club Discussion group. The Beverly Library, 1962 W. 95th St., is hosting the Jr. Book Club for ages 9 to 12 Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The group will discuss Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. Sunday

OLB Travel Softball Tryouts - If your daughter wants to take her softball game to the next level, come to Field 4 of the Spartan Athletic Complex, 9300 S. Kilbourn Ave., for tryouts for OLB Travel Softball this weekend. Tryouts are done by age group: 9U - 9:30 am - 12:00 pm; 10U - 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm; 11U - 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm; 12U - 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Oak Lawn Diamonds Softball Tryouts - Teens can also take their softball game to the next level. Oak Lawn Diamonds are holding tryouts at Fields 1 and 3 of the Spartan Athletic Complex, 9300 S. Kilbourn Ave., starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration times are 30 minutes before the start of each tryout. By age group, tryouts are as follows: 18U - 10:00am - Noon; 16U - Noon - 2:00pm; 14U - 2:00 - 4:00pm. For more information, see our event listing or contact Larry Fetchko at 708-203-7280 or larryfetch@comcast.net.

Evan's World Benefit for Evan Sauerwein - Evan has autism, epilepsy and Burkitt's Lymphoma, a notoriously aggressive cancer.
