I hope the topic of free lunch and breakfasts along with other help to lower income residents comesRead More up, they consider helping All Students!! As I pick up my grandson, I've met quite a few of the parents. Nice enough people but driving Mercedes, Lincoln and Cadillac SUVs, just about any vehicle we dream of owning! They've also told me where they live and quite a few live in 4-500,000 houses?? The kicker to this is I hear them talking about Free food, Free school supplies and Free field trips!! Doesn't the school system check out these parents before they let them participate in these Free Programs?? If my daughter and son-in-law didn't both work with me picking up the kids, they couldn't afford to even live here in OL.. I believe if you're going to give one child Free stuff, All the children should receive the same.. Whether it be lunch, supplies, or outings, we're the ones paying for all this too! I believe it's time for #122 to start taking care of All students Equally seeing how not All the parents are being Honest!!

@ Roy Rekosh..You missed my point.. I want All students to get the same benefits from theRead More district..Whether it be food or other programs..If this would happen, there would be no reason for judging...This would put all the kids on the same platform and not having my grandkids asking why the others get free stuff and they can't.. As far as you said a lot of the Big Rollers(as you put it) such as yourself went broke with the economy bust, why don't you think on it and don't judge us..We are the honest working families that lived within our means and continue to survive the same way! Just because you lived the high life, don't expect us to pay your way..Sell your toys and expensive houses and live within your means!!

There are a lot of pals between OLCHS and Richards, a lot of them went through D123 together, so theRead More theater and speech rivalries are pretty friendly. That's probably why Richards kids showed up. Yeah, give them credit!

We have incredibly talented kids at both high schools and kudos to OLCHS for the wins and toRead More Richards kids who placed 5th at Finals and earned the Sportsmanship Award out of 18 Group Interpretation schools.
The Spartans have found success that past two weekends and have earned conference superior rankings and Sectional Championship titles for both their Contest Play and Group Interpretation performances.

Lorraine, I think you meant "By Joe McCurdy".

Richards High School Group Interp is also going to State-how wonderful it would be if Oak LawnRead More schools won first and second place-we will just have to agree to disagree with which school we feel should be in first place. Richards Group Interp went to G.I. Finals last year so let us hope they both get to Finals this year.

I did, late night. Thanks, Mongo. And don't worry, Trish, we'll get to Richards, too.

"Virtual walls"? Geezus... GPS spoofing is but one way around the geofence. The otherRead More is simply walking up to someone and saying "HEY *(&*(^^#&*(Y($*() !!!!!" Or use a different app created with a bogus email account... *sigh*. Sticks and stones people... sticks and stones... Walk it off and move on...

Working at a school on weather related days, I've noticed less than half of the students show up.Read More This makes it difficult to start any new lessons with only a handful of students per classroom. Most of the time ends up being spent on reviewing old material or having the few that show up interact in educational games, reading, or even watching movies. Not really worth the dangerous situations they face traveling back and forth to school for. By the way, I was a student that walked back and forth to school back in the day. It's just common sense nowadays in weather like this to stay home. Its not the school closings that make our kids lazy... it's technology!
Rachel Greiman January 5, 2014 at 01:09 pm
Gajc (who said "...Anything for the schools to get another dayoff. Unreal") you must notRead More be aware of the fact that missed days, such as tomorrow, will have to be made up at the end of the school year. So closing tomorrow has nothing to do with schools doing anything to get days off.

Since the streets are so badly plowed in Oak Lawn a bus will not be able to pick up the studentsRead More anywhere. Only those kids that are within walking distance to school will be able to make it so yes close the schools until Oak Lawn does their job in clearing all the streets.

Common Core appears to be an extension of No Child Left Behind ( or should that have been called NoRead More Child Can Excel??). If you can't figure out the correct answer to a problem under the new system don't worry! Just explain why your answer is not right in feel good terms and it is magically a passing grade. This just makes kids less competitive in the world. What a sorry legacy we are leaving our children.

State level control works best. The Dept. of Education was created to "help" educate andRead More all I see are programs designed to dumb down the educational requirements. Send the money to the States, disband the Dept. of Education.
