Popular social studies teacher and tennis coach with a knack for bringing out the best in students, dies Friday at age 32.
Richards High School is reeling from the loss of a popular teacher and tennis coach who lost his battle with cancer. Parents received an automated voice-mail from the school principal informing them that Matt Gavin had passed away at age 32 on Friday morning. Gavin is the son of Mary Ellen Gavin, who serves Dist. 218 as a speech pathologist at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island. Listen to the automated message from the Richards HS principal. In his automated message to parents, principal John Hallberg said that counselors would be available at the school Monday to talk to students and staff. A native of Palos Hills and former Plainfield resident, Kevin Sanders was among the first responders killed in an explosion as they battled a fire at fertilizer plant in West, Texas, near Waco on April 18. “He died doing what he loved to do by serving and protecting others and will be forever remembered as a hero,” according to the obituary for Sanders, 33. Husband to wife Sarah and father to infant son Reeve, Sanders grew up in Palos Hills and graduated from Marist High School in 1997. A service to honor Sanders is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Plainfield Fire Protection District headquarters, 23748 W. 135th St. in Plainfield. Family wishes to invite Good Samaritans who tried to help James Brewer when he was on fire to his memorial service this Saturday.
The homeless man that died earlier this month when he was found burning in next to some dumpsters is finally being laid to rest. A memorial service for James “Jim” Brewer is being planned for this Saturday (April 27) at Our Lady of the Ridge Catholic Church in Chicago Ridge. As citizens waited for first responders to arrive, they tried to put out the fire on Brewer. Long time Christ Hospital volunteer Rita C. “Ritzie” Schober died Monday. She was 86 years old.
Former South Sider Rita C. "Ritzie" Schober, nee Burns, passed away April 22 in Lake Geneva, WI. The former Southsider was the wife of the late Edward Schober. She is survived by her children: Raymond, Daniel, Lynda, David and Edward; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Schober is recalled as a loyal, long-time volutneer at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. “Rita was the first adult in the work world to want to be my friend. She was a sweet heart,” reads a comment posted on Schober’s obituary from Wood Dale resident Olga Colon Bartolomeo.
