Oak Lawn Community High School students enjoy an enchanted evening of dining and dancing at senior prom.

Hundreds of Oak Lawn Community High School students hit the "read carpet" showing off their dresses, tiaras, tuxes and even matching colored gym shoes. Some students stamped their own personal style on their prom attire celebrating teenage moments. There were uniquely decorated cars, but most arrived at Ashton Place in Willowbook in limos. One grandfather chauffered his grandson in his vintage car to the prom. The theme of the 2012 Oak Lawn High prom was "Everything's Magic" and most students agreed that it was a magical evening. 5 Things To Know When Shopping for a Prom Dress

Shopping for your prom? Bridal shop owner offers tips for helping you avoid "muffin tops" and wardrobe malfunctions.

Ronia Ghusein, who once ran through a fountain wearing a $3,000 custom-designed dress at her own prom in 1996, knows how to help girls make a fashion statement. Growing up in the back of Eva’s Bridals of Oak Lawn, a store started by her grandmother in 1964, Ronia was in the unique position of having family friend Vera Wang make her prom dress before Wang became a big-time designer. “The gown was incredible,” she laughed. “It was everything I wanted it to be. It was lined in silk and I ended up running through a fountain. My mom is going to hate that story.” Eva’s still has prom dresses left ranging in price from $250 to $1,000, many of them reduced to accommodate last-minute prom shoppers. “The longer you wait the better price you’ll get …

School Nurse and Teacher Save Hannum Student's Life

If not for the swift action of a school nurse, gym teacher and a portable defibrillator, 9-year-old Caitlyn O'Reilly may not have survived a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia.

On a beautiful Leap Day morning 9-year-old Caitlyn O’Reilly’s own heart took a leap of sorts, causing the girl to collapse on the playground of Hannum Elementary School. If not for the quick thinking actions of a teacher and school nurse, and a nearby automated external defibrillator or AED—Caitlyn’s survival of a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia is pure serendipity. “It was such a shock at first and then it was so amazing that she made it,” Caitlyn’s mother, Joanne O’Reilly said, who was on her way to lunch when she received a call from the school on her cell phone. “Ninety-eight percent don’t survive it.” Born with a complex form of birth heart defect involving switching pumping chambers and great arteries with a hole in the heart, the…

D229 Board and Parents Battle Over Student Cell Phone Policy

Oak Lawn Community High School students will no longer to be able to access their phones during school day after board votes to go back to old policy.

Students at Oak Lawn Community High School will have to go back to turning off their cell phones during the day and keeping them out of sight in their lockers starting next phone. Over the strenuous objections of some parents, board members voted 4 to 3 to return to the former cell phone policy starting in the fall of 2012 during their board meeting on March 21. We want to hear from OLCHS students: Did the board act correctly in reverting back to the former cell phone policy? TELL US IN THE COMMENTS. OLCHS has currently been operating on a policy of allowing students to use their cell phones such as between classes or during lunch in the cafeteria. The school’s discipline committee comprised of administrators, teachers, parents and …

diabetic student with a cell phone

Im sorry but who are you? I am a diabetic... If you dont know 90% of being diabetic is about communication and the fact that one can communicate with their parent in the hallways during school is fantastic because I would rather text my parent in the hallway about a low blood sugar then go down to the nurse and miss class then watch a grade drop because my bloodsugar is continually going low at …   more ›
