Marist Names Champagnat Award Winner

Marist High School teacher and alum Don Richardson ’77 is this year’s winner of the Champagnat Award, an honor given to faculty members who demonstrate the example set by St. Marcellin Champagnat in their teaching.  Don will also be celebrating his 25 anniversary at Marist next year.

OLHMS Students 'Walk for Wishes'

Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School students raise $49,000 in annual Make-A-Wish Foundation walk-a-thon and land on a local morning news show.

On a day that was much too cold to be walking outside in shirtsleeves, shorts and sandals, students at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School took turns walking around their school to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation's Illinois Chapter. Inspired by Brad Pipala, a 2003 graduate of McGugan who died of cancer, the school’s student council has raised over $400,000 for the organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Richards Teacher Matt Gavin Loses Battle With Cancer

Popular social studies teacher and tennis coach with a knack for bringing out the best in students, dies Friday at age 32.

Richards High School is reeling from the loss of a popular teacher and tennis coach who lost his battle with cancer. Parents received an automated voice-mail from the school principal informing them that Matt Gavin had passed away at age 32 on Friday morning. Gavin is the son of Mary Ellen Gavin, who serves Dist. 218 as a speech pathologist at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island. Listen to the automated message from the Richards HS principal. In his automated message to parents, principal John Hallberg said that counselors would be available at the school Monday to talk to students and staff. Spartan Girls' Head to State Badminton Finals

Oak Lawn Community High School players head to IHSA state badminton finals this Friday.

Three players from the Oak Lawn Community High School girls badminton team earned the right to bring their rackets to the IHSA state finals this Friday. The IHSA State Finals take place this Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston. Senior Eliana LaSpina took third in singles at last week's sectional and qualified for the trip with a strong performance. It is the second straight year for LaSpina to take her racket to the state finals. Dynamic duo doubles’ team of senior Rachel Kestian and junior Tara Hill also advanced to state by finishing in fourth place. In other sectional action for Oak Lawn, senior Claudia Maka and the junior doubles’ team of Dee Dee Shatat and Melissa Greiman narrowly missed advancing by one …

Marist Names New Volleyball Coach

The perennially strong program will have a new leader next season.

The Redhawks are getting a new coach.  Marist High School Principal Larry Tucker and Athletic Director Bob Lim announced on Wednesday that Julie Popp Hopkins will take over as the  new Marist women’s varsity volleyball coach. Hopkins will also become a physical education instructor at the school. Hopkins will suceed longtime coach Natalie Holder who resigned at the end of last season.  Hopkins already has a few titles on her resume. She taught and coached at The Latin School in Chicago where her teams won back to back league titles in 2011 and 2012. She was named conference coach of the year in 2012, the school said in a press release. Outside of school, Hopkins works as a club volleyball coach for the Michio Volleyball Club. Hopkins is a …
