May 8: Harold and Kumar would be proud of this trip to White Castle. Joseph Bermejo, 27, of the 9200 block of Brandon Avenue, Chicago, was charged with possession of marijuana, according to an Evergreen Park report. Police saw a car in the rear parking lot of White Castle, 2555 W. 95th St., and reported smelling an odor of marijuana coming from it. When the car tried to leave, a cigar was tossed out of the window. About 0.7 gram of a substance that tested positive for marijuana was found. A lawsuit against an imprisoned preacher from Crete and an Indiana megachurch topped the week's court news.
A former megachurch preacher sentenced to 12 years in federal prison in March for carrying on a sexual relationship with a teenage member of his congregation was sued in Will County court. In addition to preacher Jack Schaap, 55, of Crete, the First Baptist Church of Hammond was named as a defendant in the lawsuit. The parents of a teenage girl Schaap had sex with while he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond filed the lawsuit. The suit identifies the parents as "John Doe and Mary Doe," and the teen as "Jane Doe." The suit gives Jane Doe's date of birth as June 27, 1995. Evergreen Park Police have alerted residents about a protest against racial profiling that is planned to take place Saturday afternoon on 95th Street.
Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders has issued a statement on the planned protest scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m. The protest is expected to start at 1 p.m. and organizers say they will march down 95th Street from Western Avenue to Cicero Avenue to protest what they see as discriminatory racial practices of the Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police departments. By a vote of 35-21, the Illinois Senate approved legislation on Friday that would allow doctors in the state to prescribe marijuana as pain relief for severe medical conditions. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bill covers 33 specific conditions—including multiple sclerosis, cancer and HIV infection—and includes several controls, with a four-year trial program, dosage limits, fingerprinting, background checks and licensed dispensing centers. “This bill is filled with walls to keep this limited,” the paper quoted sponsoring Sen. Well gosh darn it, turns out we're a bunch of potty mouths here in Illinois, thank you very much. That's the finding from the Marchex Institute, a data analysis firm, which ranks Illinois as the 5th worst cursing state in the country, though acknowledges that we're pretty liberal with our "pleases" and "thank yous." Just in time for National Etiquette Week, Marchex released findings on the most courteous and the least courteous states in the nation. The Institute examined more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. You know, the calls that "may be recorded for training purposes." A protest against alleged profiling by local police departments is scheduled to march down 95th Street this Saturday.
The organizer behind Saturday’s protest in Evergreen Park over alleged racial profiling pleaded guilty to hitting a police officer in a 2009 incident but, in a lawsuit filed against Oak Lawn, claims the department used “excessive force” in the arrest and profiled her in two traffic stops. Eric Chriswell of Burbank is promoting the protest on a Facebook page. She states the march is a response against alleged "racial profiling" by the Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police departments. Attempts to reach Chriswell have been unsuccessful. Evergreen Park police have declined to comment on the protest, other than to confirm it is scheduled. Residents, police officers gather to remember abandoned infant found dead at a Chicago Ridge recycling center.
Police officers, local residents and members of the prolife community gathered Thursday to honor the life Jeremiah Michael, the name given to an abandoned infant that was found dead at a Chicago Ridge recycling center earlier this month. People appeared shocked at the smallness of the white casket, as it was carried from a hearse before being placed on a gurney and wheeled into Our Lady of the Ridge. In a voice ragged with emotion, Rev.
