Kaylah's Mom Goes Before Traffic Review Committee on Aug. 2

Family of Kaylah Lentine, 14, who died of her injuries after being hit by a pick-up truck at the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue in May, will ask the Oak Lawn Traffic Review Committee to support making safety modifications to corner.

The mother of a 14-year-old, Hometown girl that was struck and killed crossing the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue after she had missed the morning school bus on May 24, is set to go before the traffic review committee on Thursday. Although the accident is still under police investigation, Krista Wilkinson believes that had there been a pedestrian crossing light at the corner her daughter, Kaylah Lentine, may be alive today. The driver of the pick-up truck that struck the Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School student has not been charged. Wilkinson implored the Oak Lawn Village Board lobby the Illinois Department of Transportation last month to update the corner to make it safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. …

Does anybody find it suspicious that the driver (not saying he is guilty or not) has still not surrendered his cell phone records over to the police? Maybe he is hidding something perhaps? Is there more to this story that there appears to be? If I were the OLPD I would go get a warrant for this guy to release his cell phone records so we can finally settle this so Kaylah and her family can be at …   more ›

Mom Asks Village Board to Support 'Kaylah's Cause'

The mother of a Hometown eighth-grader who was killed crossing the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Southwest Highway asks for Oak Lawn Village Board's help to make corner safer for pedestrians.

In a room before sobbing parents and children, Krista Wilkinson spoke of the agony that her family has suffered in the six weeks since her daughter, Kaylah Lentine, 14, was struck by a pickup truck and killed crossing the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue. Watch the video of Krista Wilkinson's statement. Kaylah had missed the school bus the morning of May 24 and decided to walk the two miles from her family’s residence in Hometown to Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School, where she was to have received a leadership award at the eighth-grade awards assembly. She never made it to school that morning and died before she was able to graduate from grammar school with her classmates. The accident is still under police investigation …

How sad is it when a child isn't given the opportunity to life their life to the fullest and a parent having to bury their child..These things when possible should not happen and having some safer options at this large and busy intersection can only help people avoid injury and death so I support any changes that can be made to make it safer for all especially those that live in the community and…   more ›

Family Wants Safety Modifications Added To Intersection Where 8th Grader Was Killed

The family of Kaylah Lentine, 14, who was hit by a pickup truck and killed crossing the intersection of Southwest Highway and Cicero Avenue in May, are petitioning the village for safety modifications that may have saved Kaylah's life.

There was a lot that Krista Wilkinson didn’t know about her 14-year-old daughter, Kaylah Lentine, until after she died. Subscribe to the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. Wilkinson didn’t know that Kaylah wrote poetry until her friend Marty showed her where Kaylah had hidden the poems in her bedroom. She didn’t know that Kaylah had tried to volunteer for an organization that helped abused children, only to be told she was too young. And Wilkinson didn’t know that Kaylah had set up profiles on a variety of literary websites. “I had no idea that she wrote poetry,” Wilkinson said. “There were 25 to 30 poems in her room, Marty said five or six were about him.” “She had so many interests,” Wilkinson’s fiancé, Bob Nelson, said…

I agree with Jerry. A pedestrian bridge and a connecting elevator for the handicap people would be a great idea. They have such bridges with elevators all over the world in major cities, and the accident rate is non existent. Better spend our tax money on safety of our citizens than have the politicians steal it for their benefit.   more ›
