Portable toilet found smoldering on third floor of new structure on medical campus.
A port-o-potty used by workers on the Advocate Christ Medical Center’s Outpatient construction site caught fire on Thursday morning, sending a brief plume of smoke blowing across the neighborhood. Construction workers discovered the fire mid-morning and quickly extinguished the flames. Advocate Christ spokesman Mike Maggio said that the fire was confined to a 6-foot-by-6-foot area. Evergreen Park storm chaser Danny Neal reported that the port-a-potty was on on the third floor of the new construction. Out of an abundance of caution, workers evacuated the construction site. Oak Lawn firefighters arrived on the scene and checked the area of the fire and put additional water on it. Hometown and Evergreen Park firefighters also assisted. After …

Trustee Tom Duhig says opponent never showed up to community or planning commission meetings on Advocate Christ Medical Center expansion.
By TOM DUHIG I am writing in response to a letter written by one of my opponents and published in the Patch Thursday morning. In the letter, he asks “What has happened” in the last four years in regards to the Advocate Christ Medical Center expansion. Since Mr. Vorderer has not attended a single planning or community meeting involving the hospital until he launched his political campaign, it is no surprise that he is clueless as to the strides the Village has taken to ensure that the responsible growth of Christ Hospital will not come on the backs of Oak Lawn taxpayers. I would like to take this opportunity to inform the residents exactly what has happened over the past four years and my plan for the next four years. I have attended …

Oak Lawn trustee candidate Terry Vorderer says current trustee has failed to outline a plan addressing Dist. 4's concerns about Advocate Christ Medical Center.
Thursday, April 4
By TERRY VORDERER With your vote on April 9, you will be choosing a trustee for Dist. 4. Christ Hospital and its expansion is a major issue for Dist. 4 and certainly even more for the residents that live in its shadow. I, too, live within two blocks of its front door, so I am well aware of its impact on our neighborhood. It is my opinion that our current trustee has failed to address many of our concerns with the hospital. He may argue that he has worked to effect change, but I suggest he has failed to accomplish change. No individual politician controls the agenda. To be effective, a trustee needs to understand that there are many others involved in the process that also have ideas and concerns. In order to accomplish the objectives of…

A Cook County judge will decide next month whether prosecutors can bolster their felony sex case against an Oak Lawn doctor by introducing a pending misdemeanor battery charge.
An Oak Lawn doctor charged with groping a woman in his car will find out next month if the time he allegedly molested a semi-conscious patient can be used against him in court. Rajat Prakash, 47, appeared before Judge Colleen Ann Hyland Monday morning at the Bridgeview Courthouse and was told she would later decide whether the misdemeanor battery charge can be used by prosecutors to bolster a felony sex abuse case. Prakash, a former Advocate Christ Medical Center physician, first caught the battery case when he was charged in February 2012 with fondling a 32-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis while she was in a semi-conscious state. Then, in May, another woman came forward and told police Prakash forced her to touch his penis as they …

Oak Lawn Village Board battles over shift in game plan seeking service fee from Advocate Christ for public coffers to co-venturing with village on senior wellness center at Beaty property.
Oak Lawn Village Board members discussed—ad nauseam—a plan to explore partnering with Advocate Christ Medical Center on a new senior wellness center as part of a re-development plan at the former Beatty Lumber property. The state-of-the-art senior wellness center would be built by Advocate and owned by the village, possibly as an alternative to paying an impact or service fee to the village’s general revenue fund as a cost of doing business in Oak Lawn. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and breaking news alerts. As a non-profit, the medical center does not pay the village property taxes or other fees, such as building permits. Oak Lawn trustees voted in December 2011 to begin negotiations with Advocate Christ for a service fee to …
