Boys Bowling: Richards Places 9th in State Tourney, Completes Sweep of Oak Lawn

David Walker and Andrew Byland led Richards to a ninth-place finish in the IHSA boys bowling state tournament and a sweep of rival Oak Lawn in their season-ending series on the lanes.

For the third week in a row, Richards and Oak Lawn hooked up in a boys bowling dual. No, they didn't walk across the street to carry on their neighborhood rivalry. They happily made the trek downstate to compete in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. Richards completed a conference, sectional and state tournament sweep of Oak Lawn by returning home with a ninth-place finish following two sizzling days of bowling. The Bulldogs, led by juniors David Walker and Andrew Byland, finished with a pinfall total of 12,007 and were 814 pins off the pace of state champion Andrew (12,821). Boys Bowling: Richards, Oak Lawn Raise the Stakes in Neighborhood Rivalry

Richards and Oak Lawn blasted to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Next, the two neighborhood rivals will be bowling on the IHSA's biggest stage in the state tournament.

They’re taking their neighborhood rivalry on the road and next will be competing on the biggest stage in IHSA boys bowling. Richards and Oak Lawn powered to a 1-2 finish in the Hinsdale South Sectional on Saturday at Willowbrook Lanes. Both will bowl next in the IHSA state tournament Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon. Richards, led by senior Zak Engstrom, finished with a pinfall total of 6,322 in Saturday’s sectional. The Bulldogs topped Oak Lawn (6,134) by almost 200 pins. Engstrom led Richards with a series of 1,349, good for third place in the individual medalist chase. Brian Powers of St. Joseph won the individual title with his 1,405. Update: And the Winner in Patch Athlete of the Week Voting is ...

Evergreen Park's Jesse McLain won the 126-pound championship at the Lisle Invitational. And he emerged the winner in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week honors, too.

Evergreen Park wrestling standout Jesse McLain outpolled six others in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 8-14. He is now eligible for January Patch Athlete of the Month recognition. The candidates were: Andrew Byland, junior, boys bowling, Richards. Byland powered Richards tot the team title in the South Suburban Red bowling tournament. He had a six-game series total of 1,448. Jesse McLain, senior, wrestling, Evergreen Park. McLain won the 126-pound championship at the Lisle Invitational and led the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish with 84.5 points.
