Cook County Offers to Help 'Fix' Your Pet

All Cook County pet owners are eligible for a rebate program for having their pet spayed or neutered during National Spay and Neuter Month.

Cook County is offering all residents a $40 credit for having their pet spayed or neutered throughout February—National Spay and Neuter Month. So why should you get your pet fixed? Spayed and neutered pets tend to live three to five years longer than those which aren’t, according to a press release from the county. If that’s not convincing enough, consider the millions of dogs and cats euthanized every year as a result of unwanted pregnancy. “The procedure not only helps your pet live a longer, healthier life, it benefits the community because it reduces the number of strays and unwanted animals in our neighborhoods,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a press release. “Communities spend millions of tax dollars every year…

Oak Lawn Pet Owners Face New Ordinances

Village Board amends municipal animal control ordinance introducing new requirements and stiffer fines for violations.

The Oak Lawn Village Board amended the municipal animal control ordinance stiffening fines for such violations as unleashed pets and limiting the number of cats and dogs to three per household. The amendments were spurred by an incident last summer involving an Oak Lawn man who was badly bitten by a German shepherd running loose through the neighborhood. Trustees unanimously approved the changes at their first board meeting of the year on Tuesday. “Two residents have come up to me after having been attacked by dogs,” Trustee Carol Quinlan (Dist. 5) said. “From the feedback I’ve been receiving since then it seems to be a significant problem in Oak Lawn.” Quinlan, who requested the changes, said the revised rules aren’t meant to punish …

Animal Cruelty Found at Oak Lawn Apartment Complex

Police discover dogs left behind in vacant apartment, and one dog was forced to eat another just to stay alive.

While investigating a foul odor at an apartment complex on the 4900 block of West Columbus Drive, police discovered the carcass of a pit bull inside a vacant apartment. The animal control officer was summoned Oct. 4 after police saw another dog with the carcass in the family room. Police climbed through an unlocked window and removed the surviving dog. Most of the furniture appeared to have been removed from the apartment, police said. The apartment was filled with garbage and dog feces. The landlord told police that the tenant had been evicted for non-payment of rent and had not been in the apartment for several months, although neighbors complained of hearing dogs crying inside the apartment. The surviving dog, severely dehydrated and …
