Class 6A Football Playoffs: Richards Can't Capitalize in Red Zone, Falls to Hubbard

Hubbard 29, Richards 13: A couple of key turnovers hurt the Bulldogs, and the defense couldn't get stops in a home loss to the Greyhounds in second round.

Breaking It Down: For most of this season, it’s been Richards’ physical running attack that has controlled the clock and worn down opponents. But in Saturday night’s Class 6A second-round game against Hubbard, the Greyhounds gave Richards a heavy dose of its own medicine. Quarterback Quincy Skanes and running back Anthony Johnson combined for 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns, leading the Greyhounds to a 29-13 victory over Richards in Oak Lawn. Skanes and Johnson sliced and diced their way through a Richards defense that had been very good against the run in the regular season. The two had a vast majority of their yards in the first half, but Hubbard was able to control the clock in the second half by keeping it on the ground. …

Spartans Find Meteors Are a Tall Order

Missed chances against a much taller T.F. North team stifle Oak Lawn in a 45-40 boys basketball loss.

The Oak Lawn Spartans kept it close for much of Tuesday night’s game, but too many missed opportunities on their end and second-chance — and occasionally third-chance — points by the T.F. North Meteors ended up sinking the Spartans in a 45-40 home loss. “I thought our guys were competitive,” Spartans coach Scott Atkins said. “I thought our players executed very well tonight, but that’s basketball for you.”  The Spartans (7-7, 2-4) struggled against the taller Meteors (8-3, 5-0) for much of the night. The Meteors, after being down 8-2 early, used their size to their advantage on the glass and went on a 12-2 run from midway in the first to early in the second quarter. Forward Montero Rice set the tone for the Meteors with 11 first-half …

The Spartans held off a late charge by the Thunderbolts to earn a 53-51 victory Wednesday night and improve to 2-1 on the season. "I don't think we played our best," Spartans head coach Scott Atkins said. "Our guys battled, but nothing came easy tonight." Oak Lawn jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks in part to a 3-pointer by senior guard Callen Moore. Senior guard/forward Jon Matthews scored five points during a run that gave the Spartans a 14-10 lead, but junior guard Mike Bobek sank back-to-back free throws for the Thunderbolts (1-2) to make it 14-12.
