Dave Heilmann signs off on two terms as mayor of Oak Lawn.
The stage was all Dave Heilmann’s Tuesday night, as he bid farewell to the village and lowered the curtain on his eight-year-run as mayor of Oak Lawn. The outgoing mayor, who lost his bid for a third term to Sandra Bury, presided over his last village board meeting before the mayor-elect and three new trustees are sworn in next month. More than a week after the April 9, the Cook County Clerk’s Office released the “unofficial” results of ballots cast for write-in candidates vying for the fourth seat on the Oak Lawn Community High School Dist. 229 school board. Sign up for the Oak Lawn Patch newsletter and follow us on Facebook. All election results remain “unofficial” until the vote is certified, which should happen by April 30. Write-in candidate Stephen Greene received 289 votes to Dan Sodaro’s 48 votes in Friday’s canvass. Greene will assume the fourth seat when the new D229 school board is sworn in next month. Testament to her popularity, Jane Quinlan cruised easily into her third term as village clerk of Oak Lawn. Quinlan captured all 41 of the village’s precincts, trouncing the mayor’s slated-candidate and running mate in the clerk race, Melissa Moran. As clerk, Quinlan is a non-voting member on the village board and the village's only full-time elected official. Voters’ village-wide cast ballots for the village clerk as they do the mayor. Write-in candidates for the Oak Lawn Community High School Dist. 229 school board will be hand-counted next week by Cook County Clerk's Office.
Oak Lawn Community High School Dist. 229 will not know who will fill the fourth open board seat until next week. Five candidates vied for four open seats on the D229 school board, including two write-in candidates. Balloted candidates won easily. Voters retained Jim Melnik for a four-year term on the D229 school board, with first-comers Robert Loehr and Katherine Berry also receiving a nod. Certified write-in candidates Stephen Greene and Dan Sodaro fought for the fourth open seat on the board, when not enough candidates filed nominating petitions for all four open seats in December. Sandra Bury beats two-term Mayor Dave Heilmann in stunning upset by 754 votes.
Oak Lawn voters made history on Tuesday by electing the first woman to serve as mayor. Challenger Sandra Bury captured 53 percent of the vote to Dave Heilmann’s 46 percent in a stunning upset victory over the two-term mayor. Bury took the lead out of the box by a handful of votes when the first returns came trickling in 45 minutes after the polls closed. She was down by just two votes when the second returns came in, then soared ahead where she remained for the rest of the evening.
