Marist Volleyball Standout Holder Picks Akron

Marist girls volleyball standout Ashley Holder has committed to the University of Akron.

When Marist girls volleyball coach Natalie Holder says her daughter is about to become a "zip," she is not kidding. Ashley Holder, the senior setter who led the RedHawks to a fourth-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament, has committed to the Univeristy of Akron. And Akron's teams are known as the "Zips." "It is a great fit for both of them," Natalie Holder said. "Because of her AP courses and scores at Marist, she will enter with 34 credit hours, thus starting out as a sophomore in the honors college." Ashley Holder finished with a team-leading total of 1,116 sets as Marist (34-8) claimed its first IHSA state tournament trophy in girls volleyball. She finished second on the team in digs (446).

Marist Places Fourth at Class 4A Girls Volleyball State Tournament

Redhawks drop Class 4A third-place match to St. Charles East 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Marist lost back-to-back volleyball matches just once during the regular season. The Redhawks tried to avoid doing it in the post-season during Saturday night's Class 4A third-place match against St. Charles East at Illinois State's Redbird Arena in Normal. After dropping the opening game 23-25, the Redhawks rallied for a victory in the second game, 25-22, before dropping a back-and-forth decisive third game 25-21. Marist (30-6) would leave Normal with a fourth-place trophy in its first state appearance. "(St. Charles East) did a great job serving and they were aggressive," Marist coach Natalie Holder said. "It was a true battle, and I think for both teams this is a hard match to play. "You come here with a goal and come up a little short …

Girls State Volleyball: Marist Falls to Cary-Grove in Record-Setting Semifinal Match

Redhawks lose an incredible first game by a 35-33 score and then suffer at 25-19 defeat in the second game to decide the Class 4A match in the program's first state appearance.

When you play volleyball, there's going to be a team that wins and another that loses. It's that simple. When you get to the Class 4A state semifinals, winning takes on a heightened sense of urgency, as a state trophy is on the line. It's pressure, but it's also a fantastic opportunity that teams set as one of their goals. Marist and Cary-Grove met on Friday night in the last of the Class 4A semifinals at Redbird Arena in Normal, with the match concluding a long day of volleyball at the arena that had begun at 9 a.m. And with the way the two teams were going at it in Game 1, it looked like the match might extend until Saturday morning. Cary-Grove (36-4) won the lengthy first game, 35-33, in the highest-scoring IHSA tournament game in state…

Marist Wins Girls Volleyball Supersectional, Heads to State Finals Tournament

RedHawks rally in Game 3 to beat Lyons at Hinsdale South and punch their ticket to Redbird Arena in Normal for the first time.

It's been a long time coming for Marist and nine-year coach Natalie Holder. The RedHawks have had their share of success over the years, but they had never earned a trip to the state finals. That changed on Saturday as Marist rallied from a 19-14 deficit in Game 3 and disposed of Lyons 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 to win the Hinsdale South Supersectional and advance to the Class 4A girls volleyball state finals tournament. The RedHawks will face either Stevenson or Cary-Grove in a state semifinal match at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday at Redbird Arena in Normal. "To think we started nine years ago and we had just freshmen against seniors and we were getting our (butts) kicked," Holder said. "(Former Marist standout) Abby Nelson said, with all her …

Girls Volleyball: Controversial Dig Sparks Marist's Victory at McAuley

Trailing 24-21 in the first game, the Redhawks rallied to win the last five points and then hung on in the second game to remain undefeated.

Marist’s Mallory Salis and Ashley Holder will say the ball didn’t hit the court. Fortunately for them, the referee agreed. With Mother McAuley leading Marist 23-20 in the first game of Tuesday’s volleyball showdown, Mighty Macs outside hitter Sydney McPhillips drilled a shot through the Redhawks’ blockers to the center of the court. All six McAuley players thought the kill was good and huddled together, not noticing that the referee allowed play to go on after Marist’s Deirdre Howard apparently made the dig. A Marist player free-balled the Redhawks’ third hit over the net and the point went to Marist, bringing the Redhawks within two. Marist would rally to take five of the next six points to win the first game, and the Redhawks pulled away…
