Brother Rice High School remembers Coach Tom Mitchell who died of an apparent heart attack at age 72 on Tuesday.
Brother Rice High School has announced the visitation and funeral arrangments for late Coach Tom Mitchell, who was the Crusaders' head football coach from 1967 to 1995. Coach Mitchell died at age 72 of an apparant heart attack on Tuesday. His body will lie in state in Brother Rice High School's main gym from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30. The coach led the Crusaders to an IHSA state championship in 1981, and the runner up in 1985, as well as two Chicago Prep Bowl Championships. The players from rival schools honored the memory of Brother Rice graduate Andrew Weishar who died at age 21
The stands were filled with blue shirts printed with the number 45. It was Andrew Weishar's number, and they played for him. The longtime rivalry between Brother Rice and Marist was forgotten for several minutes as the two schools came together to recognize a young man lost too soon. Andrew Weishar died in October after a three year long battle with colorectal cancer. The Brother Rice graduate was just 21 years old. Army Pfc. Ryan Kennedy died near his base in Colorado. He was a 2008 graduate of the school and hundreds of students lined Pulaski Road as his funeral cortege passed by.

On Aug. 10 hundreds of young men and members of the Brother Rice High School community lined Pulaski Road holding American flags as the funeral cortege of Army Pfc. Ryan Kennedy passed by. Kennedy's family exited their vehicle and stood in front of the school as the band played Taps. Rife with emotion, Kennedy's mother Linda listened and softly sobbed. In a Sun-Times Media interview, Linda Kennedy detailed the emotional state her son was in during the final months of his life. He served in Afghanistan and survived an explosion in 2009. On Aug. 2 he took his own life. The photos show a family in mourning and a community reaching out to honor and comfort.

Brother Rice High School proudly celebrated its 53rd commencement Thursday at Saint Xavier University's Shannon Center. The class of 222 students amassed $10 million in scholarships. Sixty-percent of the class were on the honor roll over a four-year period, and 92 percent were accepted to the first or second college of their choosing. Revisit the Brother Rice 2012 Prom. President James Antos gave a rousing commencement address encouraging the young men to "act manfully in Christ Jesus," the school's motto. The ceremony was cut short by a premature hat-tossing. The newly minted graduates were escorted out past their class purchase of a large orange inflatable character holding a cap in one hand and diploma in the other. View the photo …
