South Side Irish Parade to Honor First Responders

The grand marshals of the 2013 parade will be local first responders and the families of those recently lost in the line of duty.

It will be a fitting way to start the 2013 parade.  The South Side Irish Parade Committee announced Tuesday that this year's grand marshal will be local first responders and the families of those lost in the line of duty.  At a press conference Tuesday afternoon local officials and parade committee members honored those who lost loved ones in the line of duty. The families of Fire Captain Herbie Johnson, Police Officer Michael Flisk and Firefighter Walter Patmon, Jr. gathered at King-Lockhart Memorial Park on Western Avenue to participate in the ceremony.  It was a meaningful location for all those in attendence. How to Help Residents Displaced by Condo Building Blaze

A Saturday afternoon fire left almost 70 Morgan Park residents without a home or personal belongings. Find out how to help your neighbors in need.

Almost 70 residents of a Morgan Park condo building have been left without homes after a Saturday fire.  The 3-11 alarm blaze caused the partial collapse of large portions of the 34-unit building's interior. Over 120 firefighter responded to the fire at 2030 W. 111th Street around 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 24.  Read: UPDATED: 5-Story Morgan Park Condo Building Gutted By Fire Local officials are calling on area residents to pitch in and help those affected by the blaze. Photos: Funeral Procession for Firefighter Walter Patmon Jr.

The Chicago firefighter died Nov. 11 at the Beverly Firehouse after responding to a small fire.

In a procession that stretched for blocks, the body of fallen Chicago Firefighter Walter Patmon Jr. was escorted to its final resting place.  Patmon, 61, died on Nov. 11 after suffering what was believed to be a heart attack at the Beverly fire house. He had recently returned from a call.  The 18-year veteran of the department is survived by his wife and three daughters.  The Wednesday funeral was held at Apostolic Church of God, 6320 S. Dorchester, and Patmon was buried at Restvale Cemetery in Alsip. The procession made its way down 119th Street Wednesday afternoon.  A fund has been established for his family. Funeral Arrangements Set For Fallen Firefighter Walter Patmon, Jr.

A funeral and wake will be held next week. A fund has been established to help the veteran firefighter's family.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Walter Patmon, Jr, CFD Truck 40. Patmon, 61, an 18-year veteran of the department died on Nov. 11 after collapsing at the Beverly firehouse after returning from a fire. Visitation will be held at Leak Funeral Home, 7838 S. Cottage Grove, on Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 4p.m. to 9 p.m. A final salute will take place at 6 p.m.  The funeral will take place at the Apostolic Church of God, 6320 S. Dorchester, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The church will open at 10 a.m. for a wake.   Patmon will be buried at Restvale Cemetery, 11700 S. Another Firefighter Dies In Line of Duty

Chicago firefighter Walter Patmon Jr., 61, suffers cardiac arrest after responding to small kitchen fire on Sunday evening.

Less than a week after the funeral for CFD Capt. Herbie Johnson, another Chicago firefighter from Beverly has died in the line of duty. Firefighter Walter Patmon Jr, 61, suffered a heart attack after responding to a small kitchen fire on Sunday evening. According to Chicago Breaking News, Patmon experienced shortness of breath after returning to his firehouse in the 1700 block of West 95th Street. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park where he was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m. Patmon was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. A Funeral Befitting a Fallen Hero

Thousands of mourners filled the Saint Rita Shrine Chapel and thousands more lined the streets of Beverly to pay their final respects to a fallen firefighter and beloved neighbor.

The rows of firefighters stretched on for as far as the eye could see. Flags flew and bagpipes played as the casket of one of their own was raised into Engine 123, one last ride for the fallen hero.  Capt. Herbie Johnson, 54, died after injuries sustained while battling a fire on Nov. 2. Thousands Gather at Capt. Herbie Johnson's Wake

With a line that stretched around Saint Rita, thousands of well-wishers came to pay their respects to fallen firefighter Capt. Herbert Johnson.

Wake and funeral arrangements for Chicago Fire Department Capt. Herbert Johnson have been released.  The wake will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Shrine Chapel of Saint Rita of Cascia High School, 7740 South Western Avenue. Remembering Capt. Herbie Johnson: "To Know Him, Was to Love Him"

Capt. Herbie Johnson, a Beverly resident, died yesterday after battling a fire. Those who knew him reflect on the loss.

For residents of the 19th Ward the death of a firefighter or police officer always hits close to home. Capt. Herbie Johnson, a 32-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, died Friday, Nov. 2 after injuries sustained while responding to a fire on South Side.  The West Beverly resident was remembered by those who knew him as a caring family man and an outgoing neighbor.  "This is a sad day for Chicago, and an especially sad day for our neighborhood," said Ald. Matt O'Shea. "Herbie Johnson was a dedicated firefighter, husband, brother, father and an active member of St. Cajetan Parish. To know him was to love him."
