Cook County Offers to Help 'Fix' Your Pet

All Cook County pet owners are eligible for a rebate program for having their pet spayed or neutered during National Spay and Neuter Month.

Cook County is offering all residents a $40 credit for having their pet spayed or neutered throughout February—National Spay and Neuter Month. So why should you get your pet fixed? Spayed and neutered pets tend to live three to five years longer than those which aren’t, according to a press release from the county. If that’s not convincing enough, consider the millions of dogs and cats euthanized every year as a result of unwanted pregnancy. “The procedure not only helps your pet live a longer, healthier life, it benefits the community because it reduces the number of strays and unwanted animals in our neighborhoods,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a press release. “Communities spend millions of tax dollars every year…

Adopt Me

This Week's Pet: Brewster

Every week Patch highlights animals available for adoption at local shelters.

Brewster is an eight-month-old cat that has been living in a shelter for the last three months. Brewster's owners had to give him up after they could no longer care for him. The black and white cat loves to cuddle and would make a great addition to any family. You can find Brewster and many other loving pets at the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge.

Adopt Me

This Week's Pet: Onyx

Four-year-old cat Onyx is looking for a home.

Meet Onyx, a four-year-old domestic shorthair cat who's looking for a place to live. She has short, black fur and a long tail. Onyx has been at the Animal Welfare League of Chicago Ridge since the end of October. She came in as a stray with an infected back leg that eventually had to be amputated. "She's a trooper," said a volunteer. Onyx gets a little nervous around other animals, but loves cuddling and walking on the shoulders of humans. She is up-to-date on her shots, microchipped, but will be spayed before adoption.   Adopt Me is a weekly video feature highlighting one of the pets available for adoption at the Animal Welfare League of Chicago Ridge. To find out more about any of these pets, call the shelter at 708-636-8586 or visit www…
